{"id":609246,"date":"2026-04-15T21:03:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T21:03:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/609246\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T21:03:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T21:03:14","slug":"oscar-piastri-and-lando-norris-target-f1-2026-title-despite-slow-start","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/609246\/","title":{"rendered":"Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris target F1 2026 title despite slow start"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img width=\"875\" height=\"623\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/F1-Oscar-Piastri-Lando-Norris-2026-Japan-GP-GettyImages-2268702317.jpg\" class=\"attachment-featuredImage size-featuredImage wp-post-image\" alt=\"Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris on stage in front of a large crowd at the Japanese Grand Prix.\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>By Andrew Clarke<\/p>\n<p class=\"postdate\">Date posted: 16 April 2026<\/p>\n<p>Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris say McLaren is working hard to recover lost ground after a disrupted start to the 2026 Formula 1 season.<\/p>\n<p>McLaren Formula 1 drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris have used a Pirelli tyre test at the Nurburgring in Germany to begin bridging the knowledge gap created by a disrupted start to the 2026 season, with both drivers insisting the championship remains a realistic target.<\/p>\n<p>The pair took turns behind the wheel of McLaren\u2019s new 2026 challenger at the historic German circuit during the mid-season break between the Japanese and Miami Grands Prix. The test was called by Pirelli to evaluate potential new tyre compounds for next year, but it gave the team a welcome opportunity to accumulate mileage in the car at a time when every lap counts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the test being focused on tyres for next year, time behind the wheel is certainly never going to hurt,\u201d said Norris.<\/p>\n<p>Two races, too little data<\/p>\n<p>The test was particularly valuable given what McLaren lost in the opening rounds. The team did not start the Chinese Grand Prix and was restricted in practice at the Japanese round, two setbacks that severely limited their ability to develop an understanding of the new machinery.<\/p>\n<p>Piastri said those missed sessions had set the team back at a time when learning the 2026 car was already the primary challenge for every team on the grid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting to grips with this new generation of cars has been challenging, as we expected, and we\u2019ve seen how important track time is for this. To not start the first two races did take away significant and essential learning time, which is frustrating,\u201d said Piastri.<\/p>\n<p>Norris was similarly pointed about the cost of those early absences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe realised very early that time in the car, and getting laps on the board, is so important when it comes to learning how to get the most out of the car, and specifically the power unit. Tiny, tiny margins make significant differences,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The simulator has been another tool in the response, with both drivers logging time at McLaren\u2019s Woking facility during the April break alongside the Nurburgring running.<\/p>\n<p>Japan as a turning point<\/p>\n<p>The third round in Japan was the first time McLaren started a race under the new regulations with genuine pace, and Piastri said it demonstrated what the team was capable of when things went to plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Round 3, whilst there was still a gap at the end, we were able to push the boundaries of our initial expectations and, without the Safety Car, could have genuinely been in contention for the win,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>For Piastri personally, Japan was a standout. He described it as one of his best race weekends, evidence that McLaren could compete once the car was properly understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt showed that when we start the race, we\u2019re actually quite good,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-107346\" class=\"size-full wp-image-107346\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/F1-Oscar-Piastri-Lando-Norris-2026-China-GP-GettyImages-2268702317.jpg\" alt=\"Lando Norris leads team-mate Oscar Piastri during the Sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix.\" width=\"875\" height=\"623\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-107346\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lando Norris leads team-mate Oscar Piastri during the Sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix.<br \/>Image: GettyImages<\/p>\n<p>Learning a fundamentally different car<\/p>\n<p>Both drivers were candid about the demands the 2026 regulations have placed on them, describing machinery that behaves in ways unlike anything they have driven before in Formula 1.<\/p>\n<p>The new cars are shorter, lighter, and narrower than their 2025 predecessors, with significantly reduced downforce. That makes them more responsive at low speed but also less forgiving, requiring drivers to recalibrate instincts built over years of racing.<\/p>\n<p>Piastri said the biggest adjustment had been around power deployment, with energy harvesting and battery management now central to both qualifying and race strategy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThings like lifting on the straights to harvest energy, and then the power we have on the corner exits are all new things. Without the ground effect downforce that the 2025 cars had, the cars can feel looser, making them more prone to sliding, which also impacts tyres,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Norris said the on-the-limit character of the cars was something he genuinely enjoyed, drawing comparisons to the junior formulae he drove earlier in his career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really need a different approach when it comes to driving style. You can push these cars, find the edge and still recover. In this sense, the skill of the driver, the ability to hold on through a corner and get the best exit right on the edge is what becomes the difference in performance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Power unit frustrations linger<\/p>\n<p>The area drawing the most criticism from both drivers is the power unit management system, which at times takes deployment decisions away from the driver. Norris described a scenario in Japan where the battery triggered without his input, forcing an unplanned overtake on Lewis Hamilton and leaving him exposed on the following straight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, that\u2019s taking too much control away from the driver. But I know the FIA and all the stakeholders of the sport are looking into it. There has been good dialogue on this topic, so I am confident that something will be done for when we go racing in Miami again,\u201d said Norris.<\/p>\n<p>Piastri echoed those concerns, noting the issue extended beyond individual incidents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese cars are also more unpredictable. You\u2019ll have seen we often get spikes of power which makes these cars do unexpected things. The team enters the season as the reigning constructors\u2019 champion, with Norris holding the drivers\u2019 title, and neither is prepared to concede ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough we haven\u2019t started the season where we want to be, we still want to push hard for the championship. This isn\u2019t a case of giving up and focusing on next year. There\u2019s plenty of examples where we\u2019ve not quite been where we want to be at the start of the year, but have ended up in a much stronger position by the end. We\u2019ve been there, done it, learned from it and I trust that this team knows how to do it again,\u201d said Norris.<\/p>\n<p>Piastri pointed to McLaren\u2019s track record of in-season development as grounds for confidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClosing the gap to Mercedes and out-developing the field is something that\u2019s within our control. This team have proven how we\u2019re able to turn things around, and we\u2019re starting in a stronger position than we have in previous examples of this, such as 2024.
