LIV Golf executives have reportedly been summoned to an \u201cemergency summit\u201d in New York as rumours swirl about the future of the breakaway golf league.<\/p>\n
The Saudi-backed organisation has continued to struggle for television viewership in the US despite poaching stars like Bryson DeChambeau away from the PGA Tour.<\/p>\n
And LIV bosses have accepted their rebel tour has proved a $9 billion AUD disaster.<\/p>\n
But the rebel tour\u2019s Saudi paymasters are desperate to negotiate a merger with the PGA Tour to save face, rather than pull the plug completely.<\/p>\n
According to The Telegraph, a \u201cseismic\u201d announcement now awaits LIV \u2014 and that there wasn\u2019t a single executive from LIV present at the site of the tournament in Mexico City, the Club de Golf Chapultepec.<\/p>\n
The Financial Times reported that Saudi Arabia\u2019s Public Investment Fund (which finances the league) is on the verge of cutting off support for LIV after investing $5 billion in it, though no official decision has been made.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll be honest. None of the players have heard anything,\u201d one LIV player told The Telegraph. \u201cIt\u2019s hopefully a merger. Everyone gathers at Augusta don\u2019t they?\u201d<\/p>\n
The report comes after the X account @acaseofthegolf1 said on Tuesday night that a \u201cbombshell announcement\u201d was imminent for LIV.<\/p>\n
The account, which boasts over 195k followers, added: \u201cWe don\u2019t give out gambling advice but If you\u2019re a prediction market type person I would bet the under of whatever they have posted.\u201d<\/p>\n
LIV shook up the golf world upon its founding in 2021, as it offered eye-watering salaries to players and successfully courted the likes of DeChambeau, Jon Rahm and Phil Mickelson.<\/p>\n
By 2023, the PGA and LIV had signed a \u201cframework agreement\u201d which outlined both sides\u2019 \u201ccommon goal of creating a golf partnership and of growing and promoting the game of golf globally \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
The agreement was signed by then-PGA commissioner Jay Monahan, head of the PIF Yasir Al-Rumayyan and DP World Tour Keith Pelley.<\/p>\n
Since then, though, nothing concrete has been signed, even with Monahan, Al-Rumayyan, Tiger Woods and President Trump meeting at the White House last year.<\/p>\n
Monahan, who faced heavy scrutiny for his inconsistent handling of LIV, stepped down last year with Brian Rolapp taking over the PGA commissioner role.<\/p>\n
Rumours have also persisted that LIV and the DP World Tour could wind up striking some sort of a deal, though DP sources told The Telegraph that the New York meeting was not tied to the Euro tour.<\/p>\n
LIV\u2019s last event was held in Midrand, South Africa and won by DeChambeau.<\/p>\n
He failed to make the cut at the Masters as Rory McIlroy went on to repeat in Augusta.<\/p>\n
