The world has been screaming for the return of a turbocharged STI halo<\/a> for nearly a decade now, and now, almost six months on from the debut of the promising\u00a0Performance-B STI Concept, we have some movement.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0series of design patents\u00a0were\u00a0published by the Japanese IP office\u00a0last month showing\u00a0what appears to be a\u00a0production\u00a0version of the Performance-B\u2026 with minimal changes.<\/p>\n

The patent application was\u00a0submitted\u00a0in September last year \u2013 a month before the concept\u2019s debut at\u00a0the Japan Mobility Show\u00a0\u2013 and published in March under the \u2018passenger car\u2019 classification.<\/p>\n

Given its similarity to the concept car, it\u2019s unclear if the renders are actually of the show car or a production derivative, but either way it reinforces both how seriously Subaru is looking to rectify its sensational misstep<\/a> in axing internal combustion STIs, and how close to production the Performance-B could be.<\/p>\n

The filing has certainly captured the attention of the media and in turn, Subaru\u2019s fanbase, which the brand\u2019s local arm recently told to be patient as there\u2019s some \u201creally\u00a0exciting work going on in the background\u201d\u00a0to revive STI<\/a> in some form.<\/p>\n

The Road Ahead<\/p>\n

So\u00a0when\u2019s\u00a0the car coming? No idea, but digital creators have at least had a crack at\u00a0mocking up\u00a0the end result.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly it looks almost identical to the Performance-B save for a select few details as seen on the\u00a0leaked design patents:\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0no bonnet vents,\u00a0and\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0about it \u2013 patent images rarely show every minute element.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s\u00a0under the bonnet?\u00a0Likely a\u00a0hotter version of the WRX\u2019s 2.4-litre turbo-petrol engine good, in its most potent form\u00a0overseas, for\u00a0202kW\/376Nm.<\/p>\n
