The Australian dollar has surged to a four-year high, trading at 71.92 US cents as of 3pm AEST.<\/p>\n

The local currency traded at 72.02 US cents on June 9, 2022.<\/p>\n

The dollar’s surge follows Wall Street reaching a record high overnight.<\/p>\n

The benchmark S&P 500 rose to 7,022, up from the previous record closing high of 7,002 achieved in April.<\/p>\n

Analysts say the mood on global financial markets has improved considerably over the past few days.<\/p>\n

“The Aussie dollar paid little attention to the jobs data and is instead enjoying the tailwinds of bullish equity markets,” ITC Markets senior FX analyst Sean Callow said.<\/p>\n

“[It] suggests investors are looking ahead to a postwar global recovery that is likely to benefit Australia.<\/p>\n

“Record highs for equities in the US and Japan are too hard for traders to ignore, given the Aussie’s reputation as a ‘good times’ currency.”<\/p>\n

The value of the Australian dollar is seen as a barometer for overall global economic sentiment.<\/p>\n

The rise in the dollar against the greenback is also consistent with Wall Street’s “fear gauge”, or VIX index, falling to 18 overnight.<\/p>\n

This indicates share traders are becoming less fearful about ongoing geopolitical developments.<\/p>\n

“The Australian dollar remains a function of global risk appetite, with that driven by geopolitical risk and the prospect of de-escalation of the war in the Middle East,” Capital.com senior financial market analyst Kyle Rodda said.<\/p>\n

“There is, at the margins, a domestic story here, though, and that’s one of interest-rate differentials.”<\/p>\n

Israeli forces are expected to “overwhelm” parts of southern Lebanon and yet a ceasefire may still be only a matter of days away.<\/p>\n

Mr Rodda said he believed the currency markets were now pricing in several Reserve Bank interest rate hikes from next month.<\/p>\n

The value of the Australian dollar increases relative to other countries’ currencies as local interest rates rise.<\/p>\n

“The markets are pricing in more hikes from the RBA, with today’s jobs data showing that the labour market is no impediment to further hikes, potentially as soon as May,” Mr Rodda said.<\/p>\n

The Australian dollar is performing well against other countries too.<\/p>\n

It rallied strongly overnight to reach 0.6080 euros, its highest level in more than three weeks.<\/p>\n

It is also now above 1.21 New Zealand dollars and is now sitting at 114 Japanese yen.<\/p>\n
