MotoGP races should &#8216;finish&#8217; at the flag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The unpopular issue of MotoGP post-race tyre pressure penalties reared its head again at the recent COTA round.<\/p>\n<p>The result was changed after the Sprint medal ceremony, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/motogp\/racer\/1040772\/pedro-acosta\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pedro Acosta <\/a>demoted from third for failing to achieve the required 30% of laps over the specified minimum front pressure.<\/p>\n<p>There was also another indirect \u2018casualty\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/motogp\/racer\/911973\/joan-mir\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joan Mir <\/a>had crashed while trying to catch Acosta on the final lap, pushing over the limit in search of Honda\u2019s first podium of the year &#8211; which he would later have inherited if he had settled for fourth.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/motogp\/racer\/973238\/enea-bastianini\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Enea Bastianini <\/a>was promoted to third. But with Acosta\u2019s penalty issued two hours after the chequered flag, Tech3 missed out on the chance to properly celebrate their debut rostrum of the season.<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>KTM\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/motogp\/news\/1092994\/1\/motogp-tyre-pressure-rule-absurd-must-be-changed-or-abolished#:~:text=KTM&#039;s%20Pit%20Beirer%20has%20labelled,laps%20above%20a%20set%20pressure.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pit Beirer labelled the \u2018real-time\u2019 tyre pressure regulations<\/a> and post-race penalties &#8211; in place since the start of 2024 &#8211; as \u201cabsurd\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The switch from Michelin to Pirelli for 2027 provides a natural opportunity to revise the regulations and penalties.<\/p>\n<p>At the very least, new minimum pressure values will be required to suit the revised Italian tyres.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking before the latest controversy, Pirelli Motorcycle Racing director Giorgio Barbier began by emphasising that pressure limits are based on safety concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that everyone is not happy, because of what happens after the end of the race,\u201d Barbier told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Crash.net<\/a>, when asked for his opinion on the current rules.<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, if the present [tyre] supplier strongly asks for this rule, it&#8217;s because they believe that this might bring a safety problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, if they fix something, it&#8217;s because they believe that, under a certain limit, you might have another problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gng_1117789_hires.jpg\"   type=\"image\/jpeg\" alt=\"Pirelli Motorcycle Racing director Giorgio Barbier.\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.51\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Pirelli Motorcycle Racing director Giorgio Barbier.<\/p>\n<p> \u00a9\u00a0Gold &amp; Goose<\/p>\n<p>However, the magnitude of current in-race pressure fluctuations makes it difficult for teams to predict a correct starting pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Especially when trying to account for potential \u2018dirty air\u2019 behind other bikes, which significantly raises front tyre temperature and pressure.<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>Pirelli\u2019s tyre construction \u201cprobably\u201d relies less on tyre deformation to generate grip, meaning it is likely to operate at a higher minimum pressure than the current 1.8 bar front and 1.68 bar rear.<\/p>\n<p>Whether that alone will help with pressure variation is unclear, but the 2027 machines will also have reduced performance, and therefore tyre stress, due to smaller engines and a ban on ride-height devices.<\/p>\n<p>However, aerodynamics, although reduced, will still be significant, meaning the effect of \u2018dirty air\u2019 will remain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t know yet what will happen with our tyres,\u201d Barbier said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor sure, we\u2019ve got different casing, different dimensions, different compounds [compared to Michelin] and so that means how the pressure works inside our tyres will be different.<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor instance, we will have for sure a higher [working] pressure than what they are using now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe need for deflection they\u2019ve got now\u2026 probably it&#8217;s not as necessary with our tyres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we don&#8217;t know for sure. Because we are not used to this kind of braking, this kind of aero, or the overheating [in dirty air].<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I don&#8217;t know yet how much our front tyre will be influenced in a race situation. That\u2019s also hard to simulate in a test.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we will start fixing a new [pressure] limit with our tyres and looking at how they behave, and then we will decide what to do [with the regulations].<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor sure, there will be rules.
