Following a cool reception from incoming manufacturers like Audi over the idea to fast-track the next generation of power units, it was ultimately decided to shelve those talks and revisit them at a later date, focusing on the actual upcoming regulations instead. The flaws the first three grand prix weekends unearthed suggest that was a wise idea, with more refinements now on the way for Miami and beyond.

At the time Ben Sulayem appeared to speak out of turn, diverting public attention away from the 2026 regulations before they had even been introduced yet. However, as Domenicali confirmed in an exclusive interview with Autosport this week, there appears to be a wider consensus over the future direction of the series.

Read Also:

“I definitely see personally – but it’s up, of course, to the FIA to propose that – a sort of sustainable fuel for sure at the centre of the future, with a different balance of what could be the electrification with a strong internal combustion engine,” Domenicali told Autosport.

“Because that’s motorsport. It will allow to save a lot of kilos, to have pure racing in that respect, in terms of a lighter car, smaller cars that you can really push as much as you can. So that’s going in the direction, I believe, that the purists should be happier.”

Watch: Autosport’s Exclusive Interview with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali

It’s one of the areas commercial rightsholder FOM and governing body the FIA are aligned on, and as time has gone it has become more of a rule than an exception. There is no sugarcoating the fact the relationship between Ben Sulayem and his commercial counterparts got off to a rocky start when he was first elected in 2021. Nor any denying that the Emirati’s hierarchical and hands-on management style initially rubbed some people the wrong way within the F1 paddock, ranging from conflicts with the drivers over swearing and jewellery to a series of high-profile departures of senior personnel within the governing body.

Some reservations may still be there, but insiders suggest relations between the FIA and FOM have reached a detente over the past 24 months, with there now being a basis of mutual trust that has allowed progress on topics that actually matter, rather than fears of one side stepping on the other’s toes derailing the agenda. One such instance happened in 2023 when Ben Sulayem made public comments on F1’s valuation, which infringed on FOM’s commercial domain.

When quizzed by Autosport about F1 management’s relationship with the FIA, Domenicali said the sides are now better at communicating and understanding what the other needs and how each side operates. “I think what I can say is that the relationship with the president of the FIA and with the FIA is very strong,” Domenicali insisted. “We know that we are complementary to the sport. We will never do the role of the FIA as the FIA will never do the role of a commercial rightsholder.

“Without the volunteers that are coming to the track, a multi-billion sport would be not possible. Therefore, we need to make sure that there’s a huge respect for that and we need to give all that is needed” Stefano Domenicali

“It’s a matter of trust. It’s a matter of having a clear direction that we want to take this sport and I think we prove with the facts that at the end of the day. There has been such a big growth of our sport in such a short time that our biggest point of attention is to make sure that the legs of the table are strong enough to sustain our growth. That means the organisation of the entire ecosystem – the promoters, the broadcasters, the partners, the teams, the FIA, all of us.

“It’s a matter of understanding better each other. There was a sort of a learning curve that has been taken and today we are in a situation where the line is very clear. The trust is definitely there. Therefore, it’s good for the sport. I do believe so, at least.”

A key turning point was the new two-part Concorde Agreement which bookended the 2025 campaign, with the governance part of the deal signed in December that addressed sticking points on both sides.

The relationship between F1 and the FIA appears healthier than it’s been for a long time, as both parties strive to improve the new regs

While details of the Concorde Agreement are confidential, it is known the deal grants the governing body more funds, which Ben Sulayem promised would be used by the governing body to make its F1 operations more robust.

“This agreement allows us to continue modernising our regulatory, technological, and operational capabilities, including supporting our race directors, officials, and the thousands of volunteers whose expertise underpin every race,” Ben Sulayem was quoted at the time. “We are ensuring that Formula 1 remains at the forefront of technological innovation, setting new standards in global sport.”

Domenicali acknowledged the need for more professional officiating, too, and hopes the new deal helps support a “stronger federation”.

“I think that the expectation is we need to have a stronger federation. The sport needs to have a strong president who gives the guidance to the federation to manage the part of the sport they’re managing,” the Italian added.

“It is clear that without the volunteers that are coming to the track, a multi-billion sport would be not possible. Therefore, we need to make sure that there’s a huge respect for that and we need to give all that is needed for them to keep attracting that in the right way, giving the right respect.

“In the final of the World Cup, you need to have the best referee. We have a final of the World Cup every weekend, so we need to have the best referees that give the confidence to the drivers and to everyone that what they decide is the right decision. Whatever is needed to invest, we are there to help and support because we know that is an element, if it’s not there, the credibility of the sport will disappear.”

Having been re-elected unopposed in December for another four years, the president’s way of running the FIA with an iron fist still has its issues. But a multi-billion sport is bigger than its leaders and requires careful handling. At the end of the day, both parties still have the same end goal: making sure F1’s rapid growth remains sustainable. A rising tide lifts all boats.

Read Also:

The 2026 regulations are a work in progress

Photo by: Jayce Illman / Getty Images

We want to hear from you!

Let us know what you would like to see from us in the future.

            Take our survey

– The Autosport.com Team

If Formula 1 chief Stefano Domenicali’s comments on the series expecting a move towards a lighter and smaller…

[573
64,63,817,813,816,85,296987
0":"post-611161","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-formula-1","8":"tag-au","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-f1","11":"tag-formula-1","12":"tag-formula1","13":"tag-sports","14":"tag-what-has-changed-as-fom-and-fia-appear-more-aligned-on-f1s-future
["GET
