Billy Corgan<\/a> has vowed to never use artificial intelligence to create music, insisting that it would be a \u201cdeal with the devil.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Smashing Pumpkins<\/a> frontman made the declaration during an appearance on the podcast And the Writer Is\u2026, even bringing up the topic himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t ask me, but I\u2019m gonna make a declaratory statement,\u201d said Corgan. \u201cI refuse, refuse, patently refuse to use AI in my music creation. Because, to me, it\u2019s a deal with the devil. Simple. Whether it\u2019s the Promethean fire myth or whatever, to me you\u2019re literally leaning into the thing that will destroy you. Period. So that\u2019s why I\u2019m not gonna mess with it, because the pressure, the inspiration, the soul searching, the \u2018I\u2019m not sure I got anything else to say,\u2019 that\u2019s all part of the journey that a songwriter needs to go to.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cNow, if it was the guy in my band or somebody I met through my friend Shooter Jennings or whatever, and we\u2019re writing songs together, that\u2019s a real person with real feelings and real blood coursing through their veins. And maybe someday we\u2019re gonna argue about a publishing split. But if we\u2019re arguing, it means there\u2019s something of value that we\u2019re arguing over.\u201d<\/p>\n

The alt-rock veteran went on to say that part of the songwriting process is the imperfection that comes with it, noting, \u201cI\u2019m saying it\u2019s good that a songwriter has a doubt, it\u2019s good that a songwriter\u2019s not sure they have anything left to say, it\u2019s good that a songwriter has to think of a new chord that they haven\u2019t thought of. That\u2019s where the magic comes from, and until that is proven otherwise, I\u2019m sticking with the game I\u2019m in.\u201d<\/p>\n

As far as his \u201cdeal with the devil\u201d comment, Corgan elaborated, \u201cWe\u2019re flirting with the thing that will destroy us as an economy, as a business, as a movement. We\u2019re asking to be eradicated. We\u2019re giving them our information. They already have all our other information. God knows what the labels are doing. Am I gonna get a check someday for 62 cents? Is that coming? But I\u2019m saying, on a spiritual level to lean into it is to ask to be wiped out. You\u2019re asking to be wiped out.\u201d<\/p>\n
