(ABC News: Verity Gorman)<\/p>\n<p>Towering trees take up to 20 years to seed<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Fairman said alpine ash trees dominated their forest environment and thrived in high elevations, just below the snow line.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;ve been driving to the ski fields in New South Wales or Victoria, you&#8217;ve probably passed through alpine ash forests on your way to the top of the mountains,&#8221;  Dr Fairman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The forests provide shelter and habitat for other species, including Leadbeater&#8217;s possums and greater gliders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">They are also an important part of First Nations culture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The approved conservation advice under the EPBC Act states that the alpine ash forest ecological community is primarily threatened by altered fire regimes due to climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Areas occupied by Alpine Ash forests have experienced a substantially greater number of fires from 2001-2020 relative to the 20\u2009years prior,&#8221; the document states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A high-severity fire (greater than 90-100 per cent leaf scorch) causes 100 per cent or almost 100 per cent tree mortality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A map showing the distribution of Alpine Ash forests on mainland Australia\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/b98720c93ca7f3edecdabd5504414b72.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">This map shows where the alpine ash forests are (red) and where they could be (pink). (ABC Landline: Tim Lee)<\/p>\n<p>Concern forests will be locked up<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Hallam acknowledged that alpine ash trees were vulnerable to fire, but she did not believe the species was at risk of extinction, given its broad distribution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The decision absolutely astounded not only us, but also others involved in the sector,&#8221; Ms Hallam said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Logging is banned in nearly all alpine ash forests, but Ms Hallam said adding another layer of protection with an endangered listing would not ensure its survival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The future of the ash forests depends on active management, including seed collection and prescribed burning, amongst other activities,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The lock and leave approach is not going to help this species in any way, shape or form.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Woman smiling looking at the camera.
