But for now, Formula 1 are adamant they will not be racing in India next year.

Nevertheless, Mandaviya said discussions are underway and that it could take another six months to finalise the framework. His comments suggest a serious political effort is now in motion to revive a race that disappeared after 2013 despite strong support from drivers and fans, as early as next year.

Mandaviya told reporters: “It will take another six months to work out the modalities. The government will help in getting tax relaxations that had become a bone of contention so that it is a viable venture for the organizers.

“Given the global situation due to the ongoing USA-Israel-Iran war, India is being seen as a safe and viable venue for sporting events, including F1. We plan to have a MotoGP event before F1 returns. The Federation of Motor Sports Club of India is in talks with Formula 1 right now. We will be facilitators,” he explained.

That last point matters. India is not merely reviving an old ambition. It is now trying to reposition itself as a stable, attractive destination for global motorsport at a time when Formula 1’s calendar is under fresh geopolitical pressure.

Tax issues were central to Formula 1’s exit

The Indian Grand Prix ran from 2011 to 2013, with Vettel winning all three races at Buddh International Circuit on the outskirts of New Delhi. The track quickly earned a reputation as a drivers’ favourite thanks to its fast corners, elevation changes and flowing layout.

But the event was dogged by financial and political problems from the start.

Jaypee Sports Group struggled with the economics of the race, while the tax structure made matters worse. The Uttar Pradesh government classified Formula 1 as entertainment rather than sport, creating a major burden for organisers. Import duties on freight added another layer of cost for teams and stakeholders.

Mandaviya made clear the federal government now wants to prevent a repeat of that scenario: “If the entertainment tax cannot be altogether repealed, we will try to ensure that reimbursements are provided to incentivize the project for the organizers. Discussions are ongoing on the issue – it is an inter-ministerial matter and we are trying our best to make it attractive for F1.”

That is the strongest indication yet that New Delhi understands exactly why Formula 1 failed in India the first time round. This is no vague expression of interest. It is a direct acknowledgement that the commercial model only works if government helps neutralise the old tax burdens.

Formula 1’s commercial case for returning to India is obvious. The country offers massive reach, a fast-growing sports audience and a digital partner in FanCode that already broadcasts races in English, Hindi and Tamil.

India has market size and fan demand on its side

The sport’s fan base in India is put at 79-million strong and rising, an audience too large for Formula 1 to ignore if the venue economics can finally be made to work. Unlike many proposed venues, India does not need to sell an unknown circuit. It has a proven track, a history with the championship and a market that has only grown since the race disappeared.

The major challenge remains financial. Hosting fees for a grand prix are estimated at between $50-million and $70-million, which means any comeback needs heavyweight backing. However uncertainty in the Middle East, which tradictionally hosts four rounds, may change the financial playing field.

Furthermore, fresh corporate interest could change the equation. India’s Adani Group is exploring opportunities around Buddh International Circuit and adjoining Jaypee businesses, a development that could provide the commercial muscle needed to restart serious negotiations.

Formula 1 has long talked about untapped potential in India. This time, with political backing, tax reform on the table and renewed business interest around Buddh, the project appears to have real momentum.

The next six months may determine whether that long discussed return of the Indian Grand Prix finally becomes a reality, and rather more than just another perennial Formula 1 paddock rumour.

India is pushing to clear the tax barriers that helped drive Formula 1 away after its three race…

[573
64,63,53671,817,116085,813,816,85
0":"post-612093","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-formula-1","8":"tag-au","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-calendar","11":"tag-f1","12":"tag-f1-grand-prix","13":"tag-formula-1","14":"tag-formula1","15":"tag-sports
["GET
