RIVERLANDERS tested their skills against teams visiting from Adelaide, while highlighting the benefits of inclusivity, at a major community carnival.<\/p>\n The Berri Blazers Inclusive Basketball Carnival \u2013 running for the second year \u2013 was held last Saturday, and Sunday, at Berri\u2019s Toyota Arena.<\/p>\n Event organiser Chrissy Eleftheriadis said this year\u2019s carnival included teams from SAPOL, and the Adelaide Basketball Academy.<\/p>\n \u201cFor the first time we (had) the Law Enforcement Torch Run to open the carnival, followed by a SAPOL exhibition game, with our local coppers playing the inclusive team,\u201d Eleftheriadis said.<\/p>\n \u201c(Our) dinner at the Berri Hotel on Saturday night had about 80 people attend.<\/p>\n \u201cWe received really positive feedback last year. It\u2019s just great everyone values, and puts a strong emphasis on inclusiveness, valuing everyone, and giving each other the opportunity to play basketball.\u201d<\/p>\n Eleftheriadis said providing a platform that ensured participants had a positive experience while playing sport was personally rewarding.<\/p>\n \u201cThe friendships that have been made\u2026 have been amazing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cOur metro colleagues have a lot more experience running carnivals, so we get a lot of support from the Special Olympics in Adelaide.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Riverland (had) 29 players over the weekend, and they couldn\u2019t wait.\u201d<\/p>\n Eleftheriadis was optimistic the event would continue to expand next year.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re still fine-tuning a few things, but we\u2019re hoping to increase (the event) next year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s all run by volunteers, so we\u2019ve got amazing coaches and umpires.<\/p>\n \u201cFamilies have been really supportive as well, so we\u2019re hoping it can grow, but we need to make sure we can manage it here with the volunteers we have.<\/p>\n
