{"id":612251,"date":"2026-04-17T05:13:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T05:13:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/612251\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T05:13:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T05:13:11","slug":"pacific-rugby-investors-say-they-had-the-money-to-save-moana-pasifika","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/612251\/","title":{"rendered":"Pacific rugby investors say they had the money to save Moana Pasifika"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">A Pacific-owned rugby group says it had the funding, the plan, and the people to keep the struggling Super Rugby franchise Moana Pasifika alive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">But its takeover bid was rejected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">In an exclusive interview with William Terite on Pacific Mornings, members of Kanaloa Rugby revealed they put forward an offer late last year to buy the struggling Super Rugby franchise. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Kanaloa Rugby is a Pacific-led rugby consortium based in Hawai\u2018i, established with the aim of creating a professional franchise representing Pacific Island communities on the global stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">The group includes former international players and administrators of Pacific heritage: ex-All Blacks Jerome Kaino, Joe Rokocoko, John Afoa, Anthony Tuitavake, Ben Atiga, Sam Tuitupou, and Benson Stanley, with former S\u0101moan women&#8217;s rugby international Tracy Atiga serving in a leadership role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Kanaloa\u2019s stated mission is to provide a high-performance pathway for Pacific players while maintaining strong cultural values and a \u201cvillage ethos\u201d approach to team development and governance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">The consortium has previously explored entry into both Major League Rugby in the United States and Super Rugby in the southern hemisphere, but has not secured a competition licence to date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Kanaloa&#8217;s bid for Moana Pasifika was ultimately declined, despite the club now facing the possibility of folding after the 2026 season.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/99c1cf00c5eee5cfdb51c0678628c4fa48eeafd3-630x371.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"h-full w-full object-cover\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-sm leading-4\">Kanaloa Rugby says it offered a full buyout of Moana Pasifika but was turned away after a lengthy process. Photo\/Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">\u201cWe were happy to put forward everything that they were seeking and we provided everything that they needed, and unfortunately, our acquisition was not accepted,\u201d Tracy Atiga said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">The group says it still does not know why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">\u201cWe were told ultimately by Deloitte that there were some things in the past that they just couldn&#8217;t get past\u2026 until we actually know what those issues are, we&#8217;re not exactly sure why &#8230; our proposal was declined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">What makes the situation more striking is Kanaloa\u2019s insistence that money was not the problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">\u201cI know for sure it wasn&#8217;t a financial issue. Photo\/Moana Pasifika\/file<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">The revelation challenges a long-running narrative that Pacific-led ventures lack the resources to sustain elite teams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">\u201cFor the last five years, we&#8217;ve really struggled listening to the fact that our people don&#8217;t have the money\u2026 But in all honesty, the money has been there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Instead, Kanaloa believes the breakdown came down to communication and missed chances to work together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">\u201cI just believe it&#8217;s kind of\u2026 communication. There&#8217;s been a breakdown somewhere between all the parties,\u201d Matt Atiga said. \u201cWe&#8217;d like to unite together\u2026 to help save this club.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">The group is now calling for all sides including Moana Pasifika\u2019s owners and New Zealand Rugby to come back to the table.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">\u201cThis is\u2026 coming back to the table, being in the table, around the board table, all together, talking together, having a talanoa,\u201d Tracy said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/03a6001df60675078363f98c0351cd0ec7f1b836-1165x826.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"h-full w-full object-cover\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-sm leading-4\">New investor interest is emerging as questions grow over how Moana Pasifika reached the brink despite offers to step in. Losing the team could have lasting effects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">\u201cThe biggest risk is the momentum we&#8217;ve built together as a people,\u201d Joe Rokocoko said. \u201cIf that disappears, we risk losing faith of our youth\u2026 we lose a vital platform for our culture to really shine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Kanaloa points to the success of the Fijian Drua, the other Pacific-run franchise, as proof that a different model can work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">\u201cWe&#8217;ve got one that worked, one that didn&#8217;t\u2026 That&#8217;s the decision they need to make now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Despite being turned down, the group insists it is still ready to step in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Watch Debbie Sorensen&#8217;s full interview on PMN Tonga below.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">\u201cAbsolutely\u2026 we remain committed to the future of not only Moana Pasifika, but Pacific rugby,\u201d Sam Tuitupou said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Moana Pasifika chief executive Debbie Sorensen has signalled the club is still fighting to survive and is open to new investment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Speaking earlier this week to John Pulu on PMN Tonga, Sorensen said, \u201cDon\u2019t give up yet, that there will be a place for Moana\u2026 it can,\u201d while confirming the decision to go public about the club\u2019s financial struggles was aimed at attracting fresh backers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">She said the move was already generating interest from potential investors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">However, Sorensen also indicated that no direct approach had been made to the club by some parties, saying \u201cno one has spoken to us directly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">This highlights a possible disconnect between groups looking to get involved and the franchise itself. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Watch Kanaloa Rugby&#8217;s full interview on Pacific Mornings below.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Sorensen added that the financial challenge remains significant, with the cost of running a Super Rugby team sitting at around NZ$10 million to NZ12 million per year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Kanaloa has reached out again to key decision-makers and is waiting for talks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Their message is simple: the solution may already be in the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">\u201cWe&#8217;re ready to sit down, work collaboratively with everyone and help shape a sustainable and hopefully a successful future,\u201d Ben Atiga said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">For now, the future of Moana Pasifika remains uncertain.
