{"id":612386,"date":"2026-04-17T06:50:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T06:50:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/612386\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T06:50:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T06:50:07","slug":"fuel-prices-fall-despite-geelong-refinery-blaze-as-albanese-says-facility-production-has-slipped-by-40-petrol-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/612386\/","title":{"rendered":"Fuel prices fall despite Geelong refinery blaze as Albanese says facility production has slipped by 40% | Petrol prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Anthony Albanese says petrol production has fallen 40% at one of Australia\u2019s two remaining oil refineries but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/apr\/16\/geelongs-refinery-fire-may-be-out-but-questions-over-what-it-means-for-our-fuel-crisis-are-still-raging\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">damage caused by fire<\/a> at the Geelong facility will not lead to fuel restrictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Petrol prices have fallen below $2.10 a litre and diesel below $3 a litre in most cities, as a price spike predicted to follow the refinery shutdown failed to materialise on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The prime minister spoke on Friday morning outside the Viva Energy refinery \u2013 which had been supplying about half of Victoria\u2019s fuel before a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/apr\/16\/viva-oil-refinery-fire-corio-geelong-victoria-fuel-prices\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">massive fire burned for 13 hours until noon Thursday<\/a> \u2013 and said the facility was also producing less diesel and aviation fuel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe advice that we have received today is that 80% of diesel production is continuing, [and] 80% of aviation fuel is continuing,\u201d Albanese said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt has been slowed down just slightly because of the circumstances which are there, but 60% of petrol production [is] proceeding today as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe hope that \u2026 ramps up over the coming period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Albanese did not give a timeline on when production would return to normal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The temporary cuts to production had prompted predictions of less supply to terminals in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/victoria\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Victoria<\/a> and soaring petrol prices, but the Melbourne terminal price, charged to wholesalers, continued to fall on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wholesale unleaded was below 191 cents a litre in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, the Australian Institute of Petroleum reported. Diesel wholesale prices fell nearly 10 cents across the country from Thursday, to sit at less than 265 cents a litre in all cities except Darwin \u2013 their lowest point in a month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Pump prices have fallen accordingly, with unleaded petrol averaging less than 210 cents a litre in every capital except Brisbane and Darwin, according to MotorMouth<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Diesel was averaging less than 300 cents a litre in every capital except Hobart, at 300 cents, and in Brisbane, at 303.2. Geelong\u2019s prices also fell, to 210.8 cents a litre for unleaded and 299 cents for diesel.<\/p>\n<p><a data-name=\"placeholder\" href=\"https:\/\/interactive.guim.co.uk\/datawrapper\/embed\/nVVXJ\/1\/\" class=\"dcr-1eupayo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Graph of petrol prices for imports, wholesale and retail<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The blaze at the Viva <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/energy-australia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Energy<\/a> facility, in the Geelong suburb of Corio, began on Wednesday night, with Fire Rescue Victoria alerted to the blaze by multiple calls to triple zero reporting explosions and flames.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-svb9qg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">According to the Viva Energy website, the refinery can process about 120,000 barrels of oil each day. Last month the company said it was able to maintain supplies despite the war in Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The company said there was no \u201cimmediate impact\u201d to fuel supply from the fire, and it expected to replace any lost production through its fuel import program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Energy experts on Thursday warned more fuel restrictions could be needed and the government could have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/apr\/16\/victoria-fuel-prices-geelong-viva-oil-refinery-fire\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">move to the next stage of its fuel security plan<\/a>, as Australia grows more dependent on imports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Albanese flew home early from his fuel diplomacy mission in south-east Asia on Thursday night in the wake of the fire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said the blaze was \u201cregrettable\u201d, especially given the timing, but it would not push the country into \u201cstage 3\u201d of the national fuel plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Announced late last month, the plan has four levels:<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Plan and prepare<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Keeping Australia moving<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Taking targeted action<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Protecting critical services for all Australians<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Australia has been at level 2, with fuel supply continuing notwithstanding periods of localised supply disruptions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Under this setting, motorists are encouraged to \u201conly buy the fuel you need\u201d.
