So, Wembanyama told the small group of reporters near his locker that he’d start his availability once everybody stopped recording on their phones.

“I’ve got your back,” he told Vassell, who was still dressing.

As Wembanyama took the first question, he noticed someone recording.

“Are you still recording?” he asked.

“No, no, no,” a reporter replied. “We stopped. The gag turned into one of Wembanyama’s most entertaining plays off the court.

Seconds later, he struggled to lock down his best moments on the court.

“There were a lot of highlights in the first game, in the season opener,” Wembanyama told ESPN. “Like, that reverse and-1 dunk I had [in the season opener against the Mavericks]. I don’t think that’s my best dunk. But in the moment, [it had] the best reaction. Actually, no, it’s the cross on Dereck Lively going back to the and-1 3[-pointer]. It had the best reaction. That’s my favorite.”

That same night in Memphis, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson racked his brain trying to think of his top Wembanyama plays.

“My favorite Victor plays typically start with him in a defensive stance,” Johnson said. “And I say that because when you really watch the film, when he’s in a stance, that typically means he’s switched on mentally.

“As we sprint and transition from defense to offense, he throws an absolute strike to one of his teammates for a 3-point shot. Every now and then, he gets it back for a dunk. Those wow highlights get so much attention. The other plays are just as impressive. That sequence at times can blow you away, and maybe we are starting at times to not even allow it to blow us away. What Eason likely didn’t realize was that Wembanyama was baiting him at the rim to shoot it. Right after Eason slipped past Champagnie with an up-and-under move, Wembanyama stepped over at the last second and blocked the shot into the crowd.

Wembanyama has had his fair share of stuffs this regular season, leading the league in blocks (197) for the third straight season. But this one was probably the loudest and, at the very least, it drew a hilarious reaction from Eason’s mother.

First buzzer beater, March 19 vs. Phoenix Sunsplay

0:40

Victor Wembanyama hits a tough go-ahead shot with 1 second left

Victor Wembanyama hits a midrange jumper to put the Spurs ahead with one second left.

With his team trailing 100-99, it took nerve for Wembanyama to dribble 9.7 seconds off the clock. But that’s what he needed to do to survey the defense before stepping right, taking one dribble and hitting a go-ahead 17-foot fadeaway over Oso Ighodaro with 1.1 seconds left in the game.

The bucket clinched San Antonio’s first postseason berth since 2019 and was Wembanyama’s first go-ahead make in the final five seconds of the fourth quarter or overtime in his career, after he had missed his five previous attempts in that scenario, according to ESPN Research.

“Once you get older, you aren’t fazed by those moments,” said Fox, the inaugural NBA Clutch Player of the Year. “He isn’t fazed by them right now. He just going to continue to grow, continue to be better, and continue to be comfortable in those situations.”

On a cold March night in Memphis, Tennessee, Victor Wembanyama plopped down in a seat in the visitors…

[557
64,63,590,85
0":"post-612815","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-nba","8":"tag-au","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-nba","11":"tag-sports
["GET
