{"id":613675,"date":"2026-04-17T21:04:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T21:04:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/613675\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T21:04:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T21:04:08","slug":"being-british-doesnt-make-things-easier-claims-ex-motogp-star-scott-redding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/613675\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cBeing British doesn\u2019t make things easier\u201d, claims ex-MotoGP star Scott Redding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former MotoGP podium finisher Scott Redding believes \u201cbeing British doesn\u2019t make things any easier\u201d and that \u201cit\u2019s crazy\u201d there are no UK-born riders in the top class.<\/p>\n<p>Britain hasn\u2019t had a full-time rider on the MotoGP grid since 2020, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/motogp\/racer\/1143\/cal-crutchlow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cal Crutchlow<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/motogp\/racer\/1125\/bradley-smith\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bradley Smith<\/a> competed in their final seasons.<\/p>\n<p>In 2026, there are no British riders in MotoGP or in Moto2, after Jake Dixon &#8211; who made two premier class starts in 2021 &#8211; switched to World Superbikes for this year.<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s last world title at any level came in 2015 in Moto3 with Danny Kent, while its last MotoGP podium was in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the Full Chat podcast, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/motogp\/racer\/1908\/scott-redding\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scott Redding<\/a>, who scored two podiums across five seasons in MotoGP, weighed in on the lack of British talent in grand prix racing now.<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpain and Italy are the heart of this sport; that\u2019s where the money is,\u201d he began.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to speak badly about the championship &#8211; it\u2019s the best in the world &#8211; but\u00a0if we look at the riders on factory bikes, especially over the last three years, they\u2019re all Spanish and Italian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore Marc Marquez arrived in MotoGP, there was a rule that rookie riders had to race for one or two years on a satellite bike before moving up to a factory bike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen it was abolished the year Marquez arrived, and he went straight to Repsol HRC.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re at that level, you\u2019re not only at a disadvantage because you\u2019re riding a satellite bike most of the time, but also because of the funding issue,\u201d\u00a0he continued.<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to accepting sums that are nothing compared to what a Spaniard or an Italian would get, you also have to pay to train: you have to go to Spain and Italy to ride three times a week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re at home. They have the money; that\u2019s where the championship grew, but now\u00a0it seems to me that the situation is in their favour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cThere are excellent riders; I don\u2019t want to take anything away from them, but there are some like\u00a0Alex Rins\u00a0who\u2019s been riding an official Yamaha for a couple of years, and I ask myself, \u2018Why?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a good rider, but he\u2019s had a lot of injuries and isn\u2019t consistent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my opinion, he shouldn\u2019t be there, but\u00a0he\u2019s Spanish. Maybe\u00a0there\u2019s some small connection somewhere that could help him.<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to play the hand you\u2019re dealt, and being British doesn\u2019t make things any easier.
