Their fathers were school buddies turned mining pioneers, credited with discovering Western Australia’s phenomenal iron ore deposits that have been so crucial to the national economy.<\/p>\n

In another life, they could have been friends.<\/p>\n

Instead, a lengthy and bitter civil trial \u2014 one that ended with a judgment this week in WA’s Supreme Court \u2014 has laid bare the depths of the divisions between two billionaire heiresses and among their families.<\/p>\n

In the end, it was all about the money.<\/p>\n

In one corner, Gina Rinehart, the richest person in Australia and one of the wealthiest in the world, daughter of Lang Hancock and no stranger to the spotlight.<\/p>\n

In the other, the intensely private Angela Bennett, daughter of Hancock’s business partner of many decades, Peter Wright.<\/p>\n

Both women of advancing age, both backed by fabulous wealth thanks to iron ore royalties earned from tenements pegged by their enterprising fathers decades ago.<\/p>\n

And both determined to fight it out to get what they perceived as their fair share.<\/p>\n

‘Harmonious and cooperative’<\/p>\n

In her lengthy judgment, spanning more than 1,500 pages, Justice Jennifer Smith paid tribute to Hancock and Wright’s partnership, and the involvement of fellow prospector Don Rhodes.<\/p>\n

“At the heart of the issues raised by the parties to the proceedings were a number of formal agreements made decades ago between men who were friends or colleagues who for some years engaged in harmonious and cooperative arrangements to explore, discover and prospect for iron ore in the East Pilbara,” she wrote.<\/p>\n

“They were Lang Hancock, Peter Wright and Don Rhodes.”<\/p>\n

Here’s what you need to know about the Gina Rinehart court ruling<\/a><\/p>\n

The blockbuster court ruling over WA mining tenements worth billions of dollars is the culmination of a complicated legal battle that has pitted family against family and siblings against each other.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Harmonious and cooperative” would be the last words you would choose to describe the latest courtroom stoush between the men’s families that culminated in a finding that the Wright and Rhodes camps were entitled to more than they had been receiving from the tenements.<\/p>\n

It’s not the first time Bennett has taken on Rinehart over mining royalties.<\/p>\n

A 2010 Supreme Court judgment \u2014 after a nine-year legal battle \u2014 stripped Rinehart of her 25 per cent stake in the lucrative Rhodes Ridge iron ore project, awarding it to Wright Prospecting, which already had a 25 per cent stake.<\/p>\n

The judge ruled it was in keeping with a Hancock-Wright agreement from 1984 in which they agreed to split their assets, and despite a series of appeals from the Rinehart camp, the decision was upheld.<\/p>\n

And it was that court victory, which has proved extremely lucrative for the Wright family, that encouraged them to pursue the litigation that culminated in this week’s judgment.<\/p>\n

School mates<\/p>\n

Rinehart and Bennett’s fathers met at elite Perth boys’ school Hale College in the 1920s, becoming firm friends, and when Hancock invited Wright for a holiday at his pastoral station in WA’s Pilbara, the kernel of a business partnership was born.<\/p>\n

Hancock was the maverick prospector with the entrepreneurial vision, Wright the quietly spoken accountant and skilled negotiator.<\/p>\n

Their different strengths gave rise to an alliance that would reshape the economic future of Western Australia, helping to open up the vast mining riches of the Pilbara, and in the process, earning themselves enormous wealth.<\/p>\n

But as affluent as they were in their own lifetimes, the money they made was to be far eclipsed by the billions that would be generated once the tenements were developed into fully fledged mines and the precious ore dug up and shipped to China.<\/p>\n

And therein, it seemed, lay the problem.<\/p>\n

Families at war<\/p>\n

It’s an old adage that money can’t buy you happiness, and the Hancock-Rineharts and the Wright-Bennetts appear an archetypical case in point.<\/p>\n

The Hancock-Wright partnership was never meant to end in acrimony, and the men were at pains to put in place a plan to try to ensure an equitable division of their assets when they died.<\/p>\n

A number of agreements were hashed out in the years before Wright’s 1985 death, while both men were in their 70s, that they hoped would provide certainty to their heirs.<\/p>\n

How wrong they were.<\/p>\n

Instead of the men’s friendship extending to the next generation, their daughters have been anything but amiable to each other.<\/p>\n

As the dust settles on a mammoth case, the reviews are in<\/a><\/p>\n

Gina Rinehart and her company, Hancock Prospecting, are the “clear winners” of what prominent Perth industry commentator Tim Treadgold has declared “big daddy” of legal battles.<\/p>\n

Instead of the two families’ bounteous wealth being amicably shared to the gratification of all, the eye-watering sums that have poured into both families’ coffers from iron ore royalties seem to have led only to family resentment and division.<\/p>\n

Both families have been riven by disputes over money that have ended in litigation, with the public court wranglings exposing unedifying family dynamics they would doubtless have preferred to keep out of the spotlight.<\/p>\n

Years of acrimony<\/p>\n

While Rinehart now speaks lovingly of her father and his achievements, the pair barely spoke for years after 1985, when Hancock married his housekeeper Rose Lacson, who was 40 years his junior and whom Rinehart loathed.<\/p>\n

Their acrimonious relationship was laid bare after his death, when Rinehart accused her stepmother of accelerating his demise and sued her over his estate, precipitating an 11-year legal battle that ultimately awarded his mining assets to Rinehart and property to his widow.<\/p>\n

That unsightly saga was revived in the hearings leading up to this week’s judgment, with Rinehart’s own lawyer sensationally claiming Lang siphoned money from the family business in order to fund the “luxurious lifestyle” of his wife, who was allegedly referred to by Rinehart as an “oriental concubine”.<\/p>\n

This had led Rinehart to move assets out of the family trust to preserve the dynastic fortune, her lawyer said.<\/p>\n

Son John and daughter Bianca, who are fighting a separate legal battle over the trust that has also spanned more than a decade, viewed her actions differently.<\/p>\n

John’s lawyer, Christopher Withers, told the court Rinehart had tried to “devalue and destroy” the trust by stripping its assets that were the rightful inheritance of her children.<\/p>\n

It was a “calculated and deliberate fraud” by Rinehart, he told the court, with the aim of “increasing her personal wealth at the expense of her children”.<\/p>\n

But Justice Smith found their claim “failed at the first hurdle”.<\/p>\n

Patriarch’s concerns<\/p>\n

On the Bennett side, it seems equally apparent that extraordinary wealth has not brought family harmony.<\/p>\n

Bennett and her brothers have also had their dirty laundry aired in court, with Julian Wright claiming Bennett and their other brother Michael, who died in 2012, had duped him out of his rightful share in a 1987 settlement between the siblings.<\/p>\n

Under that agreement he received $6.8 million for his one-third stake in the family business, a stake that would be worth multiple billions today.<\/p>\n

While the Supreme Court ruled they had undervalued the worth of the company to Julian and breached their fiduciary duties, he ultimately lost the case, but not before a prescient handwritten note from Peter Wright was tendered in court, dated June 1980.<\/p>\n

In it, the family patriarch expresses concern about deteriorating family relationships.<\/p>\n

“Unless we work together as a team \u2014 we’ve no chance of success in the area most important \u2014 (family unity, successful in business + in living),” part of the note reads.<\/p>\n

The ‘secret love child’<\/p>\n

And that “family unity” was to be tested again in 2015 with the emergence of a teenager dubbed by tabloids as the “secret love child” of Michael Wright, who took her half-siblings to court over her inheritance.<\/p>\n

Few people knew Wright had fathered a fourth child, who had grown up in a working-class suburb in Perth’s south.<\/p>\n

But when, at the age of 19, she sued for a greater share of her father’s estate than the $3 million she was allocated, Olivia Mead’s name was suddenly everywhere.<\/p>\n

The three children of Wright’s second marriage received about $800 million, and Mead argued that her inheritance was unjust by comparison, especially considering the diamond-encrusted bass guitar and million-dollar piano she told the court she hoped to buy.<\/p>\n

She was initially awarded $25 million by the court, reduced to $6 million on appeal.<\/p>\n

Family reunion?<\/p>\n

For his part, Gina Rinehart’s eldest son John, who told The Guardian earlier this year he hadn’t spoken to his mother in years, appears keen to heal family wounds.<\/p>\n

Referring to “the pain this conflict has caused all parties over the years”, he said he would “much prefer to focus on the positive, and find a fair and reasonable way forward for the whole family.”<\/p>\n

“My primary focus for the next 21 days is an attempt at that reunification, and a return to the close family we had at various times in the last 50 years of my life,” he said in a statement following the judgment.<\/p>\n

“I hope we can finally put these events from decades ago behind us, and as a united family, celebrate and continue the contribution we have made to Australia.”<\/p>\n
