(AAP: Julian Smith)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The judge ruled it was in keeping with a Hancock-Wright agreement from 1984 in which they agreed to split their assets, and despite a series of appeals from the Rinehart camp, the decision was upheld.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">And it was that court victory, which has proved extremely lucrative for the Wright family, that encouraged them to pursue the litigation that culminated in this week&#8217;s judgment.<\/p>\n<p>School mates<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Rinehart and Bennett&#8217;s fathers met at elite Perth boys&#8217; of what prominent Perth industry commentator Tim Treadgold has declared &#8220;big daddy&#8221; of legal battles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Instead of the two families&#8217; bounteous wealth being amicably shared to the gratification of all, the eye-watering sums that have poured into both families&#8217; coffers from iron ore royalties seem to have led only to family resentment and division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Both families have been riven by disputes over money that have ended in litigation, with the public court wranglings exposing unedifying family dynamics they would doubtless have preferred to keep out of the spotlight.<\/p>\n<p>Years of acrimony<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While Rinehart now speaks lovingly of her father and his achievements, the pair barely spoke for years after 1985, when Hancock married his housekeeper Rose Lacson, who was 40 years his junior and whom Rinehart loathed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Their acrimonious relationship was laid bare after his death, when Rinehart accused her stepmother of accelerating his demise and sued her over his estate, precipitating an 11-year legal battle that ultimately awarded his mining assets to Rinehart and property to his widow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That unsightly saga was revived in the hearings leading up to this week&#8217;s judgment, with Rinehart&#8217;s own lawyer sensationally claiming Lang siphoned money from the family business in order to fund the &#8220;luxurious lifestyle&#8221;
