LEXINGTON, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb men’s tennis team continued its strong season on Friday afternoon with a decisive 4\u20130 victory over Presbyterian in the semifinal round of the Big South Championship at the Lexington County Tennis Complex. The win moves Gardner-Webb to 16\u20135 on the season and into the conference championship match.<\/p>\n

Gardner-Webb set the tone early in a tightly contested doubles session. The Runnin’ Bulldogs secured the opening point by winning two of the three courts, with all three matches requiring tiebreakers. The duo of Alexandre Bergeron<\/a> and Noah Zeiger<\/a> delivered the clinching win at No. 3 doubles, edging Thomas Anderson and Eduardo Valentin, 7\u20136. Kaua Cressoni<\/a> and Boyd Schreiber<\/a> also picked up a key 7\u20136 victory at the top spot to help GWU claim the doubles point. <\/p>\n

In singles play, the Runnin’ Bulldogs carried that momentum into a dominant performance. Kaua Cressoni<\/a> quickly put Gardner-Webb ahead 2\u20130 with a convincing 6\u20131, 6\u20132 win over Gabriel Godoy at No. 5 singles. Johan Van Wijk<\/a> followed with a strong effort at No. 4 singles, battling to a 6\u20132, 7\u20135 victory over Eduardo Valentin to push the lead to 3\u20130. <\/p>\n

Noah Zeiger<\/a> sealed the match for Gardner-Webb at No. 2 singles, bouncing back after dropping the second set to defeat David Mamalat 6\u20132, 3\u20136, 6\u20131 and clinch the team victory. <\/p>\n

Several other courts were still in progress when the match was decided, including strong efforts from Schreiber, Graham Bourne<\/a>, and Bergeron, who were all battling through competitive matches.<\/p>\n

With the shutout win, Gardner-Webb advances to the conference championship match, facing the winner of No. 2 seed NJIT and No. 3 seed Longwood tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.<\/p>\n
