(ABC Eyre Peninsula: Jodie Hamilton)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There are at least four variations of croquet played in Australia but only association croquet (AC) and golf croquet (GC) are governed by the World Croquet Federation, which sets the rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">AC is the traditional game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The object is to be the first player to send each of their balls through six hoops in both directions, in a fixed order, and to strike a central peg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The game can take between up to three hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One player at a time is on the court, whereas in GC, which became popular in the 1990s, all players, sometimes in teams, are on the court at once.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The first to get their ball through the hoop gains the point, so players try to knock opponents&#8217; balls out of the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">About 85 per cent of Australia&#8217;s 10,000 croquet players are GC players and about 25 per cent play AC, while some play both forms.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"One woman having a croquet shot with a yellow ball, aiming for a hoop. (ABC Eyre Peninsula: Jodie Hamilton)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There are 900 croquet members in South Australia across 33 clubs, but this year the state had lost five country clubs from formal competitions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Canberra Croquet Club member and former Croquet Australia events manager, Peter Freer, says player numbers nationally have grown steadily as baby boomers retire and look for something to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The social side is really good, and that&#8217;s very good for people who are perhaps risking being isolated because they&#8217;re empty nesters and people have all left home, so it&#8217;s a way of connecting,&#8221; Mr Freer says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He plays five days a week at the Canberra Croquet Club.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He says it is a good sport for keeping the brain active.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s all about putting balls through hoops \u2014 so on one level it&#8217;s very silly, but tactically, there&#8217;s a lot of things [like thinking] about &#8216;Do you go for the hoop? Or do you hit someone[&#8216;s ball] away?
