{"id":614215,"date":"2026-04-18T02:57:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T02:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/614215\/"},"modified":"2026-04-18T02:57:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T02:57:12","slug":"diamond-coating-nearly-doubles-chinese-ai-data-centres-cooling-efficiency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/614215\/","title":{"rendered":"Diamond coating nearly doubles Chinese AI data centre\u2019s cooling efficiency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Chinese researchers have developed a new diamond-copper material that they say can improve the cooling efficiency of artificial intelligence (AI) data centres by up to 80 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The functional carbon materials team \u2013 from the Ningbo Institute of Industrial Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) \u2013 said the composite material had already been deployed in an <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\/article\/3342636\/china-trials-its-largest-locally-made-ai-computing-resource-major-infrastructure-push?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AI computing node in Zhengzhou<\/a> in Henan province, China Science Daily reported.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The global computing industry\u2019s pursuit of AI breakthroughs is hitting a \u201cthermal wall\u201d \u2013 overheating caused by the higher heat output of new-generation chips due to their increased power density.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">China relies on imported high-end heat dissipation materials, but the cost and their ability to conduct heat are having a direct impact on the country\u2019s ability to build a self-sufficient computing infrastructure, according to the official newspaper Science and Technology Daily.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">As a result, securing an independent and controllable thermal management materials industry is vital for China\u2019s computing power sector and core competitiveness.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The team said the diamond-copper composite material had a thermal conductivity exceeding 1,000 watts per metre-kelvin (W\/mK).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The diamond-copper composite material boosts the heat transfer capacity of chip modules, improving chip performance by 10 per cent.
