At The Remy on the Trails apartment complex in Houston, a channelized (surrounded by concrete or brick) pond reportedly serves as home to dozens of native red-eared slider turtles. According to locals, the complex has removed a ramp\u2014the semi-aquatic turtles\u2019 sole means of accessing dry ground. Making matters worse, it being egg-laying season for them, any animals unable to reach soil to lay their eggs can become egg-bound, leading to ruptured organs, infection, and eventually an agonizing death. The turtles have reportedly been stranded in the water for more than two weeks already, with only one small basking rock to fight for, leaving the rest deprived of the daily 10-12 hours of sunlight required for Vitamin D3 synthesis\u2014essential for calcium absorption, which prevents metabolic bone disease and ensures a hard shell.<\/p>\n
