However, unable to play in Samoa, they had to be based in Auckland and on and off field success was difficult to come by.<\/p>\n<p>But Umaga said Moana had been a vital pathway for young Tongans and Samoans and without it, many players who are being selected to play Tests for their country could have to drop back to club rugby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe gap between where we are currently in terms of Samoa and Tonga internationally to where we need to get to is very big,\u201d Umaga said. \u201cAnd if we don\u2019t have opportunities like Moana to keep bridging that gap, then it\u2019s going to be tough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the last four years, Samoa just scraped into the World Cup. The previous cycle before that was Tonga [just making it]. And if we keep going the way we\u2019re going, we don\u2019t want it to happen, but the possibility is that Samoa or Tonga might not make the next cycle of the World Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tana Umaga has great fears for rugby in the Pacific.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/71854f4045923ee1f2dde5db9623ff2e9a13a3d6.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>Tana Umaga has great fears for rugby in the Pacific.Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The threat of Samoa and Tonga falling behind the rest of the world is made even more perilous by the fact rugby league is growing in both countries, and the <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/sport\/nail-in-the-coffin-pacific-rugby-leaders-raise-alarm-about-nrl-s-png-deal-20250703-p5mc4t.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NRL was given a war chest <\/a>by the Australian government as part of the Papua New Guinea Chiefs expansion deal. Rugby remains the national sport in Samoa and Tonga, but Umaga worries about how long that can last without pathways for elite players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there\u2019s nothing to compete against, then I\u2019m sure that [league taking over] is probably something that we\u2019ve got to be thinking about. That\u2019s the real risk,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fine if we\u2019re not there, but then what for Samoa and Tonga? Rugby league\u2019s got a great product at the moment, and it\u2019s very popular.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve got a lot of money that\u2019s being put into it, and they\u2019re all over the islands promoting it.
