MS Features: Visually impaired athlete Dennard Lee finishes HYROX with guide<\/p>\n

Before the race even begins, the strain is already there \u2014 muscles tight, palms slick with sweat, breath measured and deliberate.<\/p>\n

For HYROX Singapore 2026 competitor Dennard Lee, every step forward is not just physical. It\u2019s an act of trust, resilience, and sheer will.<\/p>\n

At 42 years old, the visually impaired athlete isn\u2019t just chasing a finish line. He\u2019s redefining what it means to show up.<\/p>\n

From ordinary beginnings to an extraordinary path<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just an ordinary guy,\u201d Dennard shares, reflecting on life before he lost his sight. \u201cChasing simple dreams and enjoying life to the fullest.\u201d<\/p>\n

But as his vision gradually faded due to cone-rod dystrophy about 10 years ago, so did the independence he once took for granted \u2014 especially in fitness.<\/p>\n

What used to be solo runs and personal training sessions became something far more complex, even dangerous.<\/p>\n

\u201cI used to love to train and run alone,\u201d he says. \u201cNow, I have to do all these with a guide whom I can trust\u2026 these can cost serious injuries and even death if not executed properly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet instead of stepping back, Dennard leaned in.<\/p>\n

Discovering HYROX, and a new purpose<\/p>\n

After a decade-long break from endurance sports, Dennard initially set his sights on completing a marathon.<\/p>\n

But fate, and a community initiative, led him somewhere unexpected.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Through the National Council on Strength & Fitness (NCSF), he was introduced to HYROX \u2014 a global fitness race that combines endurance running with functional workout stations.<\/p>\n

Unlike traditional races, HYROX stood out for its adaptive categories, offering athletes of different abilities a chance to compete on their own terms.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat gave me another platform, another opportunity to stay fit and healthy,\u201d Dennard explains. \u201cMy objective was simple. To complete the race.\u201d<\/p>\n

And leading up to race day on 4 April, that\u2019s exactly what he worked towards.<\/p>\n

Trust, teamwork, and gummy bears<\/p>\n

Behind Dennard\u2019s race, and the preparation leading up to it, is a partnership built on trust.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have an amazing guide, Desmond Lau,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Their relationship goes far beyond coordination on the racecourse.<\/p>\n

Despite being a new father, Desmond dedicates time to train with Dennard, guiding him through every stage \u2014 from pacing and positioning to something as small (and sweet) as handing him gummy bears mid-race.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe adjusts to my every need,\u201d Dennard says. \u201cMaking sure I\u2019m safe, informing me on distance, speed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dennard described it to MS News as being \u201clike a father-son relationship, though I\u2019m much older than him\u201d.<\/p>\n

For a visually impaired athlete, that level of trust is not easily given \u2014 or earned.<\/p>\n

Dennard doesn\u2019t see himself as extraordinary. But his presence on the HYROX stage tells a different story.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just be who I am,\u201d he says simply. \u201cIf such a small and petite guy who cannot see well can complete, who can\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout his journey, what stood out most wasn\u2019t the difficulty, but the overwhelming support.<\/p>\n

From strangers cheering him on to people going out of their way to guide and assist, Dennard credits his finish to a \u201clegion of beautiful and wonderful people\u201d.<\/p>\n

More than fitness, a meaningful life<\/p>\n

As a partner of HYROX, AIA champions the idea of helping people live healthier, longer lives.<\/p>\n

But for Dennard, that philosophy goes beyond physical health.<\/p>\n

Quoting the song lyric, \u201cThis little light of mine, I\u2019m gonna let it shine\u201d he shared his perspective.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not about longevity or health,\u201d said Dennard to MS News.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut a meaningful experience of life and the ability to make things a little better, a little positivity and happiness in the lives of people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Through initiatives that support inclusive fitness spaces and community participation, AIA played a role in enabling athletes like Dennard to pursue goals that might otherwise feel out of reach.<\/p>\n

Even after conquering HYROX, Dennard isn\u2019t slowing down.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s already eyeing a full marathon before the year ends, and hopes to inspire more visually impaired individuals to step into the world of fitness.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t just stay inspired,\u201d he said. \u201cLet it make a change in your life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because while his body aches from the race, he presses on anyway.<\/p>\n

Will the aching of your leg due to a walk cause you to stop walking for good?<\/p>\n

\u2018Live a life with no regret\u2019<\/p>\n

Dennard admits he almost didn\u2019t make it to the starting line. Doubts crept in, and at one point, he even backed out.<\/p>\n

But encouragement from friends pulled him back.<\/p>\n

\u201cI chose to continue\u2026 not to look at timings, not to allow pride to step in. I am here for the experience,\u201d said Dennard.<\/p>\n

And what an experience it was.<\/p>\n

\u201cI fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Dennard Lee, HYROX wasn\u2019t just a competition.<\/p>\n

It was proof that limits are often far less fixed than we think.<\/p>\n
