Are you OK?” Supriya Ganesh’s Dr. Mohan asks before the screen fades to black.

It’s not until the finale, which airs April 16, that we find out what’s going on. In an exclusive clip from Episode 15 that aired on TODAY, Dr. Al-Hashimi confides in Robby about her experience with seizures, which began after a case of viral meningitis when she was 5 years old.

Before Season 2’s Fourth of July shift, she had been seizure-free for more than a year. But during the stressful shift, she experienced two absence seizures, which present as brief lapses of consciousness.

Toward the end of the conversation, Robby asks what her options and next steps are. She lists out a possible change in her medication, a surgery or a device implantation.

“You need to disclose this,” Robby says.

“I know. I have a plan,” she responds.

Below, Moafi discusses that conversation with Robby and reveals more of her character’s backstory, clearing up some of the mystery surrounding the Pitt’s new attending ahead of tonight’s season finale.

This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.

I want to start with that conversation with Robby and how she immediately lists out her options.

She has it all mapped out.

What does that show about her, now that we’re seeing something that’s going on in personal life compared to how she’s dealing with patients?

I think that shows so much of her character, which is grounded in control and precision and preparation. She tries to find all the spaces and all the ways that she can prepare and have control because of this condition. And because of some of the environments that she’s worked in — there’s absolutely no control. I think it shows a lot about who she is also in being so forthcoming about her condition and and that she seeks help, she needs help, and she’s honest about it.

There’s a brief moment where she does hide because she’s caught off guard. She hasn’t has had a seizure in more than a year, and then she has two, and so she’s trying to process what’s happening to her. Then when she finally has a moment, within a span of an hour and a half or so, she finally gets her ducks in a row and comes to the person that that she, in that moment, trusts or wants to trust, wants to build a closeness and connection with: Dr. Robby.

She’s tried to appeal to Dr. Robby through medicine from personal angle and now she’s trying to appeal to him and his heart through her wound, because she sees his wound, too. So it’s an opportunity to get closer and and have connection, maybe from all the pain and PTSD that we’ve both had.

It backfires. Pretty badly.

Sepideh Moafi as Dr. Al-Hashimi in Season 2, Episode 15 of “The Pitt,” which airs April 16.Warrick Page / HBO MaxDo you think she treats and has treated her own condition like a doctor?

Yeah, I think it’s been a driving force in her life to find ways, solutions, even when they don’t exist. I think that’s what drove her to go into clinical informatics, which is data science and research for the advancement of medicine. And I think her own condition, being a lifelong patient, obviously informs her approach to this.

She’s always been so rigorous and hands on and tried to stay ahead of the game in terms of prevention. For anybody who suffers these types of seizures, or any types of seizures, you know that it’s not under your control. There are ways to mitigate, there are ways to manage, but ultimately the body finds creative ways of getting around whatever medicine or whatever treatment you’ve gotten. She had laser ablation therapy, which worked for 12 years. She’s been on countless meds — it’s been a lifelong journey for her.

I spoke with Taylor Dearden yesterday and we talked about how in Season 1, they sat everyone down and gave everyone a backstory that may never be shown on “The Pitt.” Did you also get a backstory?

It was quite a whirlwind when I joined the show, and they had so much on their plates. The intention was to sit down before we started. We didn’t actually sit down until after I started, but I filled out a backstory for myself. So when I sat down with them, we kind of compared, and I took what they had written, and I said, “Well, I love this,” “Actually, I didn’t think about it like this,” “How do you feel about this aspect?” So we kind of melded our two stories together, and throughout the process, it just deepened.

Her backstory is so important because of her condition and because of her background as a humanitarian aid worker and as a doctor working in war zones and conflict zones. I mean, that takes a certain kind of character, a certain kind of sacrifice and a certain quality in a person to have the desire to do that, to go where help is most needed, despite, your own career, your life, your family. So that says a lot about her to me.

Is there something specific that you went into that sit down with that you were most passionate about making sure stuck from your version?

Yeah, there was a piece about both my parents. So my (character’s) father is Iraqi and went to Iran in the ’60s. He grew up in Iran, and then they both fled before the revolution. My family fled in the years after the revolution. They fled before the revolution as part of the Cold War, as negotiations — basically they were allowing students, in particular, offering them scholarships and admission into schools like MIT and Stanford. And so my (character’s) father was accepted into Stanford. My (character’s) mother was accepted full ride to Johns Hopkins but was pregnant and decided they were both going to study medicine. Because she was pregnant, she decided to forego the scholarship and support her husband. That sacrifice was something that I know of so many refugee and immigrant mothers — my own mother —having to give up your life for your children for a better opportunity.

That’s a torch that (Dr. Al-Hashimi) holds on to. It’s not just her own life and her legacy that she is fighting for, it’s also her mother’s.

That was my story for the character.

That’s so detailed and granular. How did having that backstory affect your confidence walking onto set every day?

As a woman in any field you’re faced with — and I’m not just saying this flippantly, I’ve experienced it throughout my life. Every single woman I know has experienced it, whether they share it or not. Every single woman in medicine that I’ve met has experienced it, and many have said that, the healthcare world is decades behind many other industries. So the challenges that she’s been faced with, in particular the sexism that she’s had to deal with throughout her life and career, it takes a spine of steel.

I think all of the things that she can draw power and support and confidence from — and part of that is when life is too hard to get up and move ahead for yourself, you need other people, and I think her mother is a huge driving force for her. There’s no option to give up because her mother gave up so much for her and so her being able to fulfill her mother’s lifelong goal and passion is part of her own. Medicine and finding ways to improve the system is just as much a part of it as fulfilling her mother’s goals.

Over the course of Season 2, “The Pitt” newcomer Sepideh Moafi’s character, Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi, has evolved from…

[36
64,63,137,532
0":"post-615594","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-nutrition","8":"tag-au","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-health","11":"tag-nutrition
["GET
