It\u2019s a message that will be delivered to Anthony Albanese via a slow, 38-day walk from Melbourne to Parliament House in Canberra, and a reminder of the importance of facing uncomfortable truths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Lovett, a Kerrupmara Gunditjmara man, served as a commissioner and co-chair on the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/jul\/01\/victorias-indigenous-people-experienced-genocide-truth-telling-inquiry-says\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Yoorrook Justice Commission<\/a>, the country\u2019s first formal, Indigenous-led truth-telling inquiry. He completed the first stage of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/jun\/18\/walk-for-truth-hundreds-of-people-join-486km-trek-from-portland-to-melbourne-for-reconciliation\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">walk for truth in May last year<\/a>, when he trekked 486km from Portland in Victoria\u2019s south-west, on Gunditjmara country, to the steps of state parliament in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-svb9qg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Sunday he will set off again, carrying message sticks and visiting sites of deep cultural and historical significance along the 500km journey from the steps of the Victorian parliament to the lawns of the Australian parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Before departing, Lovett says he sent letters to \u201cevery federal politician in the country\u201d on \u201call sides\u201d of parliament \u2013 including the prime minister \u2013 inviting them to meet and walk alongside him. Ten replied to say they will walk with him and two declined \u2013 the rest have yet to respond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The aim of the walk is to bring about a national discussion on truth-telling, a subject Lovett says is often misunderstood by the wider public. The aim is not to \u201cname and blame everyday Australians\u201d, he says, but to invite them on a path of healing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe\u2019ve heard it all before, the: \u2018why do I gotta say sorry to your people, I did nothing wrong\u2019. That\u2019s true. Photograph: Diego Fedele\/AAP<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe are walking for a national truth-telling process, not a new election commitment &#8230; This is not just for our people, but for all Australians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Establishing a national truth-telling process was one of three asks of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/uluru-statement-from-the-heart\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Uluru statement from the heart<\/a> in 2017, which the Albanese government committed to implement. The voice to parliament, which failed at referendum in 2023, was just one part.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHe also said in the last election win [in 2025] a really important point,\u201d Lovett says. He said \u2018nobody left behind\u2019. We are being left behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The latest report on Closing the Gap shows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/mar\/28\/closing-the-gap-policy-australia-first-nations-aboriginal-indigenous-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">only four of the 19 targets are on track<\/a>. Rates of suicide, incarceration, and child removal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/feb\/11\/albanese-closing-gap-speech-indigenous-australians-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are increasing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\" \u2018Bloody stains of colonisation\u2019: Victorian premier speaks at truth-telling hearing \u2013 video\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/8192.jpg\" height=\"259\" width=\"460\" class=\"dcr-1qi2at0\"\/> \u2018Bloody stains of colonisation\u2019: Victorian premier speaks at truth-telling hearing \u2013 video<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Progress on a national truth-telling body has been quietly shelved in the wake of the failed referendum. Asked by Guardian Australia if the government had abandoned the truth and treaty elements of the Uluru statement, a spokesperson for Albanese says it is \u201cimportant Australians have a deeper understanding of our shared history\u201d and that the prime minister supported work being done at a state and territory level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe Albanese government supports the work being done in jurisdictions like Victoria which has signed Australia\u2019s first treaty, following the significant work of the Yoorrook Justice Commission,\u201d they say. \u201cTruth-telling is taking place across the country in community-led projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They noted that the federal minister for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/indigenous-australians\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Indigenous Australians<\/a>, Malarndirri McCarthy, met with Lovett during his walk for truth last year, and said the government \u201cacknowledges the important work he did as a Yoorrook Commissioner\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The leader of the Australian Greens, Larissa Waters, says Lovett\u2019s campaign is an opportunity for the Albanese government to reconsider establishing a truth-telling process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe\u2019ve seen the federal government walk back its commitment to a makarrata commission,\u201d she says. \u201cThis walk for truth is a call to reconsider, and to acknowledge that truth-telling is at the heart of reconciliation and justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Waters plans to join Lovett on the last leg of his walk as he heads into Canberra.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is an opportunity to walk with First Nations people and hear their stories about connection to the land and their experiences since colonisation,\u201d she says. \u201cSome of these stories are difficult and some are beautiful, but we have a responsibility to acknowledge the truths of Australia\u2019s past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Independent senator for the ACT, David Pocock, also plans to meet with Lovett, saying that the walk is a \u201cpowerful way to bring attention back to the truth-telling and reconciliation that we need to do as a country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhile the referendum\u2019s outcome was deeply disappointing for many Australians, particularly First Nations Australians, the result was a vote against the proposed constitutional changes, not a vote against reconciliation,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Travis Lovett\u2019s kangaroo skin cloak bears the words, \u201cTruth is not about blame, it\u2019s about healing\u201d.
