I can feel it in my lungs. I can feel it when I breathe. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When I smoke cigarettes, I would sit down, I would roll a cigarette, I&#8217;d go for a walk, I&#8217;d chat to a mate, I&#8217;d had one cigarette, I&#8217;d come inside, I&#8217;d do what I was doing. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But Canberra&#8217;s first dedicated vaping support program says young people are taking it upon themselves to overcome addiction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Nicotine Knockout, operated through Anglicare&#8217;s The Junction Youth Health Service opened in March, offering people under 25 years old support from nurses and youth workers to tackle nicotine dependence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Nicotine Knockout nurse practitioner Diane Bowden said a good number of young Canberrans wanted to get off vapes, and were &#8220;motivated&#8221; to quit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They probably have tried previously, and they might have succeeded for a short time, but then it&#8217;s something&#8217;s happened and they&#8217;ve taken it up again,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with a blonde bob stands indoors next to a young woman with long brown hair.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/db3030670a29c33854bb8819de01b125.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Diane Bowden says she believes Nicotine Knockout&#8217;s supportive environment is a big part of the program&#8217;s early uptake. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In the last few months, Mr Owens-Gale, who is too old for Nicotine Knockout, switched to using a prescription vape to try and break his addiction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said it doesn&#8217;t hurt his lungs as much as an unregulated vape, which makes it harder to quit completely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The lung pain is really what gave me the kick to get off it. (ABC News: Toby Hunt)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But outgoing ACT Australian Medical Association President Dr Kerrie Aust said with a single device containing the equivalent nicotine amount of 50 cigarettes, no vape is good for health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said in the short-term, vaping can cause anxiety, but the long-term health impacts are still unclear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;People will feel agitated, they will have lots of cravings, it often affects their sleep,&#8221; said Dr Aust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Longer term, we know that people will start to report persistent cough, reduced exercise tolerance, and sometimes an increased propensity towards lung infections.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Using vapes for stress management&#8217;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An image of a teenager's hand holding a vape.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/8b139612ca00b21d36e01394f3344296.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The most common reasons Canberrans aged 16 to 44 reported starting vaping was curiosity, or because they think it tastes better. (ABC News: Rachel Carbonell)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Recent research from the University of New South Wales <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/health\/2026-03-31\/vaping-cancer-likely-to-cause-cancer-australian-research\/106503804\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106503804\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found nicotine vapes are likely to cause lung and oral cancers<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Although e-cigarettes were originally introduced to help people quit smoking, Dr Aust said traditional nicotine replacement methods have been more effective for her patients.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve had no patients have success with using vaping to quit,&#8221;  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We do have a lot more success with using the traditional forms of nicotine replacement therapy such as patches, gum and the nicotine inhalers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While 65.7 per cent of Canberra&#8217;s smokers aged 45 to 64 vape to help them quit tobacco, young people take up vaping for a different reason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 2024 ACT General Health Survey found the most common reasons Canberrans aged 16 to 44 start vaping is because they&#8217;re curious, or because they think it tastes better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Bowden said the reasons young people start vaping are complex.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It could just be a fact of, okay, they&#8217;ve started doing it because of peer group pressure, now they&#8217;re addicted,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But there is definitely that element that are using vapes for stress management, anxiety, depression.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So, the mental health component is huge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Convenience of nicotine in the pocket<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A pile of vaping products.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/693233722564bdaf6fe9afcbd30f8256.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Vapes can only be legally sold in a pharmacy, to help people quit or manage nicotine dependence, but illegal vapes are not difficult to find. During any of the crackdowns, I have been able to go and purchase them. All the places that sell them still sell them,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That&#8217;s not to disparage the government&#8217;s crackdown.
