{"id":616084,"date":"2026-04-19T00:34:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T00:34:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/616084\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T00:34:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T00:34:16","slug":"nascar-news-shane-van-gisbergen-qualifies-17th-at-kansas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/616084\/","title":{"rendered":"NASCAR news: Shane van Gisbergen qualifies 17th at Kansas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/HGN7wzWWsAAaq5l.jpg\" alt=\"SVG \u2018shaking\u2019 after sketchy personal-best Kansas qualifying\"\/><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tShane van Gisbergen qualified 17th at Kansas Speedway.<\/p>\n<p>The Trackhouse Racing driver will start Monday\u2019s race at the one-and-a-half-mile speedway from 17th.<\/p>\n<p>He out-qualified his two teammates Ross Chastain and Connor Zilisch, who were only 31st and 36th in the 37-car field.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler Reddick took pole position for top Toyota team 23XI Racing, continuing a rich vein of form for last year\u2019s regular season champion.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the third pole position this year for Reddick, who sits atop the standings with four wins to his name this season.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fcttn.com\/products\/v8s-in-nz-tee\" rel=\"nofollow sponsored noopener\" data-bid=\"1\" data-no-instant=\"1\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none; vertical-align: middle;\" src=\"https:\/\/speedcafe.b-cdn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3-1.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Van Gisbergen\u2019s lap \u2013 a 29.537s \u2013 put him 0.758s adrift of Reddick.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking midway through qualifying, van Gisbergen said he left time on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPractice was pretty decent but I\u2019m shaking a bit. That was pretty full-on,\u201d said van Gisbergen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried going flat in [turn] three and then just lost it. These qualifying laps are a rush, it was pretty cool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou pick up eight tenths (between practice and qualifying) but you only have one corner to feel what you have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got to turn into [turn] one flat-out, which I\u2019ve never done before \u2013 and it stuck. It\u2019s a cool feeling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInto [turn] three as well, I thought I was good and then I just had a big moment. Seat of the pants stuff, it\u2019s pretty cool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt close,\u201d said van Gisbergen when asked if he nearly went wide-open through the third turn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I went again and we made a small adjustment, I think I could have. I don\u2019t know, it\u2019s a cool feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s van Gisbergen\u2019s best qualifying at Kansas Speedway, with his previous efforts 34th and 24th last year.<\/p>\n<p>He noted the year-on-year change with the Chevrolet Camaro, which this year has been given a facelift.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think our body is so different. Our balance numbers are way off where they were last year and I feel that more than the weather,\u201d van Gisbergen explained when asked about the cool conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t feel the wind too much. I did two laps and we were terrible. We pitted, made a big adjustment, and it was fine. We\u2019re just not quite understanding where the car is yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kansas is the scene of van Gisbergen\u2019s career-best oval finish in the Cup Series.<\/p>\n<p>He claimed 10th late last season and is optimistic that he can continue that form.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s certainly one of my better ones, for sure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m finding so far, tracks we go to twice a year are really my good ones \u2014 apart from Bristol, I\u2019m shit there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTracks like Kansas, Vegas, they\u2019re my tracks where I seem to be more competitive at higher speeds.
