{"id":61693,"date":"2025-08-12T04:50:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T04:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/61693\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T04:50:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T04:50:10","slug":"greens-withhold-support-for-labors-bid-for-tasmanian-government-at-this-stage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/61693\/","title":{"rendered":"Greens withhold support for Labor&#8217;s bid for Tasmanian government &#8216;at this stage&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Greens leader Rosalie Woodruff says her party cannot support Labor leader Dean Winter&#8217;s bid to become premier &#8220;at this stage&#8221;, claiming he has demonstrated &#8220;no capacity or intention to negotiate in good faith&#8221; with her party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A motion of no confidence in Liberal premier Jeremy Rockliff&#8217;s government, and confidence in a Labor minority government is expected to be moved when state parliament resumes next Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Labor needs the five Greens, plus three other crossbenchers to support it for it to be successful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Following a meeting with Mr Winter on Tuesday morning, Dr Woodruff said Mr Winter had also not shown any intention to make policy compromises &#8220;on the issues we promised Tasmanians we&#8217;d fight for&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At this stage we cannot have any confidence in the proposed motion to make Dean Winter the premier of Tasmania in parliament next week,&#8221;  she said.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dean Winter outside parliament following a meeting with the crossbench 2025-08-07 10:08:00\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/571abc6909c6b91978aa0f454a41fb8a\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dean Winter has been courting the crossbenchers, but has consistently said he will not do a &#8220;deal&#8221; with the Greens. (ABC News: Ebony ten Broeke)<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Time is running out&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Woodruff said the door &#8220;remained open&#8221; for further negotiations with Labor, but Mr Winter needed to come to the bargaining table if he wanted the support of the Greens.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Labor got some 25 per cent of the vote, but under Dean Winter they&#8217;re acting like they get 100 per cent of their way,&#8221;  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We expect to have policy compromises on the issues we fought for, around the [proposed Macquarie Point] stadium, around protecting the environment, around budget repair so that money goes back into health and housing where it should be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">We haven&#8217;t heard any movement on this from Dean Winter and it&#8217;s on that basis that we would not be able to support a Dean Winter Labor government if that&#8217;s the motion moved next week in parliament.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There&#8217;s been nothing in that area at all, no meaningful movement on negotiations at all and time&#8217;s running out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We want something up-front. (ABC News: Ebony ten Broeke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Rockliff said on Tuesday he was taking &#8220;nothing for granted&#8221; ahead of the looming no-confidence vote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will always work with and engage with the crossbench, to listen and to learn where they come from, where their passions lie,&#8221;  he said.Winter warns of &#8216;Abetz, Rockliff&#8217; job cuts if Greens fail to back Labor<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Standing alongside his would-be treasurer, independent MLC Ruth Forrest, to expand on his plan to fix the state budget, Mr Winter refused to bend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said the choice for the crossbench, between a government led by him, and one led by Mr Rockliff, was stark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;For people like Rosalie Woodruff, she needs to make a choice between [Treasurer] Eric Abetz and Jeremy Rockliff cutting 2,500 public sector jobs, or myself and Ruth Forrest who have a plan to fix the budget by working together across revenue and expenditure options,&#8221; Mr Winter said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a man in blue suit stands in front of a blonde woman.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/207c36509dbaa73859c7650edda42a6b\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dean Winter is imploring the crossbenchers to support Labor, to allow Ruth Forrest (right) to begin work on budget repair as treasurer. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Winter said Labor would be working with the crossbench to outline its plans for the budget, and making the parliament last a full four years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said Labor and the crossbench had &#8220;very similar priorities when it comes to the budget, housing and health&#8221; but insisted the party would not compromise on its values and beliefs, such as its fierce pro-industry stance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It can&#8217;t be around horse trading or policy trade-offs at the start.
