A balanced, varied diet does much of the heavy lifting, something Brolin has explored at both ends of the spectrum.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u2018No sugar. It\u2019s a Spartan approach \u2013 one that helped him drop 30 lbs (roughly 13kg) in 11 weeks \u2013 but not without trade-offs. Heat exposure can increase blood flow and may help reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/train-smarter\/a65157819\/is-doms-a-sign-of-muscle-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/train-smarter\/a65157819\/is-doms-a-sign-of-muscle-growth\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"DOMS\" data-node-id=\"51.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DOMS<\/a>), while regular sauna use has been linked to reduced stress and improved recovery. Cold exposure, meanwhile, can support circulation and perceived recovery.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"55\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">It\u2019s a more measured approach than Brolin has taken in the past. In preparation for Deadpool 2, the then-50-year-old worked with former pro bodybuilder Justin Lovato, who helped build him into Cable \u2013 a physically imposing antagonist.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"59\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u2018Josh sent me a few photos of Cable that he liked,\u2019 Lovato said. \u2018The character is all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a70778665\/bodyweight-bicep-curls\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a70778665\/bodyweight-bicep-curls\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"arms\" data-node-id=\"59.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">arms<\/a> and has a huge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/g757107\/one-workout-for-huge-upper-body-strength\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/g757107\/one-workout-for-huge-upper-body-strength\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"upper body\" data-node-id=\"59.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">upper body<\/a>, so I knew it was going to be a lot of work.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"63\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Training sessions lasted up to three hours a day, split between cardio, mobility and bodybuilding-style work, targeting two to three muscle groups per session.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"67\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u2018A typical day for Josh Brolin was that he would turn up in the morning, we\u2019d put him through mobility work and circuit training,\u2019 Lovato told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IBcLKuoexoM\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IBcLKuoexoM\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Men\u2019s Health\" data-node-id=\"67.1.0\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Men\u2019s Health<\/a>, \u2018and then he\u2019d come back in the afternoon for a bodybuilding session. He views ageing as a process of shedding what\u2019s unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"92\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u2018I like getting older,\u2019 he told The Times. \u2018It\u2019s like a great excuse to finally go, \u201cOK, just mellow out.\u201d I wake up with eyes wide\u2026 and shame no longer follows me like a reticent dog.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"96\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">That mindset is reinforced by his relationships.
