At one point, the dog entered his room and jumped on his couch.<\/p>\n<p>Ehrlich was forced to mute his audio and turn his camera off while the dog was ushered out.<\/p>\n<p>AFL representative Albert Dinelli KC argued that while Johnson\u2019s decision to disconnect from the hearing and rejoin was \u201cregrettable\u201d it did not amount to an error of law and did not have \u201ca material impact on the case\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s pick<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/sport\/afl\/inside-the-shambolic-zak-butters-tribunal-process-that-failed-at-every-step-20260415-p5zo2a.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A perplexed Zak Butters after a 50-metre penalty was paid against Port Adelaide. \" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/9aa14f1a3acae34a76958f0bd121c38df884ede2.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dinelli argued Johnson fully participated in the hearing despite moving to his phone.<\/p>\n<p>After deliberating for 15 minutes AFL Appeal Board chairman Will Houghton upheld the appeal and agreed Johnson\u2019s conduct amounted to an error of law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was clearly an error of law that had a material impact on the decision of the tribunal,\u201d Houghton said.<\/p>\n<p>Houghton said he accepted Johnson\u2019s attention could \u201chave been diverted\u201d from the case, when he was driving to his appointment.<\/p>\n<p>The AFL Appeal Board recommended the case be remitted and heard by another tribunal.<\/p>\n<p>However, Dinelli said his instructions were not to do that and Butters\u2019 charge and subsequent $1500 fine were dismissed.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Port Adelaide confirmed they would not seek a re-hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile Port Adelaide welcomes the dismissal of this matter, the club maintains its position that the tribunal process needs to be reviewed,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>In a separate statement, the AFL apologised to Port players Butters and Ollie Wines, the club\u2019s football manager Ben Rutten and AFL umpire Nick Foot for the error of law and inconvenience caused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AFL reiterates its strong support for the AFL Tribunal and all of those who make an important contribution to the conduct of the AFL disciplinary system, including former players who lend an important perspective to these matters,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AFL also expresses its strong support for umpires at all levels and the vital role they play in our sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AFL will now reflect on the reasons of the appeal board and learnings from tonight\u2019s outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The AFL\u2019s players\u2019 association repeated its concerns about the process which followed Butters\u2019 alleged comment to umpire Foot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AFLPA reiterates that this issue should have been resolved in the days after the match, not referred to the tribunal in the first place,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis case has brought into focus opportunities to improve the tribunal system for players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to fully support Zak.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Liberatore not expected to face concussion panel<\/p>\n<p>Michael Gleeson<\/p>\n<p>Tom Liberatore will go through regular concussion protocols and there is no plan for the Bulldogs midfielder to front an independent concussion panel for permission to return to play.<\/p>\n<p>Liberatore has had a history of head injuries in the game, including in 2024 when he was ruled out at the time for an open-ended period after he <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/sport\/afl\/liberatore-bulldogs-fall-over-as-essendon-romp-away-20240412-p5fjip.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">randomly collapsed during a game<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tom Liberatore suffered another concussion against Geelong\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/f7570052020d67dc278cd5f4baea52efcb2f888a.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>Tom Liberatore suffered another concussion against GeelongAFL Photos<\/p>\n<p>The Bulldogs said that at this point Liberatore was being treated under the usual protocols with no requirement or plan for him to consult an AFL panel. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this stage there is nothing about a panel, he is just in the concussion protocol,\u201d Bulldogs football manager Sam Power said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know there has been a bit of rumour floating about because of his history, but he is just in the regular protocol at this stage and we will see how he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, captain Marcus Bontempelli was cleared of any serious structural damage from a minor hyperextension of the knee during Friday night\u2019s loss to Geelong. Bontempelli was thought to have suffered some bone bruising, but Dogs Power said he had pulled up well and been given the all clear.<\/p>\n<p>Rory Lobb was cleared of damage to his hamstring and will potentially be available this week.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Gardiner and Jed Busslinger have both played well in the VFL and shape as replacements for James O\u2019Donnell, who tore a hamstring. At this stage, Jordan has got a little calf injury and, with his history there, they\u2019re just being pretty cautious with his approach,\u201d McGrath said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll see how he presents \u2026 throughout the week, but I don\u2019t think weekend will be realistic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Magpies eased the pressure with their five-point win over Carlton at the MCG last Thursday, although they were fortunate to escape with the victory when young Blue Talor Byrne botched a set shot to tie the game after the final siren.<\/p>\n<p>Having struggled to score heavily all season, the Magpies put a season-high 88 points on the board on Thursday night, improving their record to 3-3 and ensuring they remain in the finals hunt.<\/p>\n<p>Nick Daicos, in his 100th game, was brilliant all night with 39 disposals, nine score involvements and 449 metres gained, while small forward Jamie Elliott \u2013 who struggled to have an impact recently up forward \u2013 booted three goals.<\/p>\n<p>Moore said the strong performance of youngsters Will Hayes, Angus Anderson and Roan Steel had been pivotal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes you have got to win pretty, and sometimes you have got to win gritty. And it was a pretty gritty win for us on Thursday night.
