{"id":619513,"date":"2026-04-20T16:33:19","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T16:33:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/619513\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T16:33:19","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T16:33:19","slug":"nrl-icon-touts-shock-super-league-destination-for-nathan-cleary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/619513\/","title":{"rendered":"NRL icon touts shock Super League destination for Nathan Cleary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NRL immortal Andrew Johns has tipped his former club Warrington to make a move for Nathan Cleary, saying Wolves owner Simon Moran \u2018would move heaven and earth\u2019 to secure the superstar\u2019s signing.<\/p>\n<p>As things stand, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loverugbyleague.com\/tag\/penrith\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Penrith Panthers<\/a> star Cleary\u2019s contract is set to expire at the end of 2027, meaning that clubs are permitted to speak to him from November 1.<\/p>\n<p>The half-back\u2019s situation is one which, understandably, is already gaining consistent traction both Down Under and here in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loverugbyleague.com\/post\/hull-fc-nathan-cleary-transfer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earlier this month<\/a>, it emerged that Hull FC had made enquiries about Cleary and even tabled him a multi-million pound offer to sound him out.<\/p>\n<p>But while nothing further has come from those reports, icon Johns has now touted former club <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loverugbyleague.com\/club\/warrington-wolves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Warrington<\/a> as a potential destination for the best player in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There\u2019s talk of Warrington. I know the owner there, Simon Moran, and he would move heaven and earth to get Nathan there\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Johns played 250 games for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loverugbyleague.com\/nrl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NRL<\/a> outfit Newcastle Knights between 1993 and 2007, enjoying a three-game stint in Super League at Warrington at the back end of 2005 which saw him score a sole try against Hull FC as well as kicking 12 goals.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on <a rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0-6F8RFELWE\" target=\"_blank\">NRL on Nine<\/a> over the weekend about Cleary, he said: \u201cNathan doesn\u2019t play for money, he plays because he loves the game and he respects the game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t go to the PNG Chiefs purely for money. I know it\u2019s a huge incentive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s talk of Warrington. I know the owner there, Simon Moran, and he would move heaven and earth to get Nathan there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four-time NRL winner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loverugbyleague.com\/tag\/nathan-cleary\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cleary<\/a> \u2013 who represents both Australia on the international front and New South Wales in State of Origin \u2013 recently made his 200th appearance for Penrith.<\/p>\n<p>His links to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loverugbyleague.com\/super-league\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Super League<\/a> are bolstered by the fact that partner Mary Fowler is here in the UK, playing for Manchester City.<\/p>\n<p>Johns continued: \u201cAnd also to mentor young half-back called Ewan Irwin, who looks special. They\u2019d love to get him there to work with their young half.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anyone can get it done in England, it\u2019s Simon Moran in rugby league.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d think he wants to be near his partner, Mary Fowler, the long distance would be difficult on them both.
