\n\tJosh Hutcherson<\/a> is opening up about the online backlash he received last year for not being a Taylor Swift<\/a> fan, saying it\u2019s exactly why he stays off the internet.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a new interview with GQ<\/a>, the famously offline actor reflected on reentering the worldwide web last year during the press tour for Rachel Sennott\u2019s HBO show \u201cI Love L.A.,\u201d and a certain Swift comment that got him in hot water.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring a video interview with i-D Magazine, Hutcherson and his castmate Jordan Firstman played a game of camera roll roulette and Hutcherson pulled up a photo of him and his mom in the VIP section at Swift\u2019s Era Tour in New Orleans. \u201cMy mom made me,\u201d Hutcherson said of the concert, prompting Firstman to ask if he\u2019s a fan of the pop star. \u201cI\u2019m not a Swiftie,\u201d Hutcherson replied. \u201cVery much not. No shade, all respect, but definitely not.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThis prompted a firestorm on social media, with some fans calling for Hutcherson to be canceled for accepting VIP tickets when he\u2019s not really a fan. Responding to the backlash, Hutcherson told GQ: \u201cI got some heat because I did a photo shoot with Jordan, and Jordan asked me something about being a [Taylor Swift fan], and I was like, \u2018Oh no, I\u2019m definitely not a Swiftie,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cAll of a sudden it garnered this, \u2018Fuck him! He\u2019s a monster! Destroy him! He\u2019s short! He hates her because he\u2019s short!\u2019 [He is five feet five.] \u201cIt\u2019s just like, whoa! I think she\u2019s great. Her music is not my kind of music. That is why I don\u2019t want to be online.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSince \u201cI Love L.A.\u201d has been out in the world, Hutcherson has returned to his offline ways. \u201cI don\u2019t need that energy,\u201d he told GQ of limiting his presence on socials. \u201cIt\u2019s counterintuitive to my job, because if people know you more, you can\u2019t disappear into characters. They see you as, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s Josh.\u2019 You know what I mean? So, if you\u2019re a fucking meme, people know you for the meme.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHutcherson\u2019s starring role in \u201cThe Hunger Games\u201d franchise as Peeta Mellark did result in quite a few memes, but the actor still proudly stands by the films. \u201cI could talk all day about \u2018Hunger Games,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cI think [they] are amazing books. They\u2019re fantastic movies. They stand for something important and real, especially in today\u2019s world. The themes of authoritarianism and overpowering violent governments are very present. They didn\u2019t listen to \u2018The Hunger Games.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThough he acknowledged a movie is \u201cnot going to change the world,\u201d he told GQ that it delivers an apt \u201cwarning about giving government too much power and control.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tHe continued: \u201cAbout not standing up against authoritarians. About stripping away civil rights, human rights. Being an American right now, it\u2019s like\u2026 what the fuck is going on? \u2026 The fact that we\u2019re at ICE raids in the streets and funding wars,. The fact that there are a lot of Americans who support it \u2014 and many more who don\u2019t \u2014 makes you feel like an alien in your own place. It\u2019s like, how are we allowing this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tA prequel to the original \u201cHunger Games\u201d movies, titled \u201cSunrise on the Reaping,\u201d is set to release in November. While it\u2019s been reported<\/a> that Hutcherson\u2019s Peeta and Jennifer Lawrence\u2019s Katniss do make an appearance in a flash-forward sequence of the film, the actor told GQ he \u201ccannot confirm nor unconfirm\u201d if he will have a cameo.<\/p>\n
