A young man killed when a car veered out of control outside a Melbourne comic convention has been remembered by loved ones as someone full of warmth who had his plans for the future cut short.<\/p>\n
Volkan Aksoy, 20, died after a Toyota Echo swerved across Langs Road in Ascot Vale and mounted a kerb near the Melbourne Showgrounds about 5pm on Saturday. He had spent much of the day with friends at the Supanova Comic Con and Gaming event.<\/p>\n
Emergency services were unable to save him.<\/p>\n
Police allege the driver, a 33-year-old Werribee man, was on bail and unlicensed at the time of the incident. Amer Dau appeared in court on Monday charged with dangerous driving causing death, culpable driving and committing an indictable offence while on bail.<\/p>\n
He did not apply for bail and remains in custody ahead of his next court appearance in September.<\/p>\n
Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash. Authorities have ruled out terrorism, but say further charges may be laid as inquiries progress.<\/p>\n
A close friend of Mr Aksoy remains in hospital with a cracked skull and fractured leg but is in a serious yet stable condition. Another friend has since been discharged after treatment for shock.<\/p>\n
Aksoy\u2019s mother paid tribute to her son, describing him as \u201ca kind and compassionate young man who cherished time with his friends and family, whom he loved deeply\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe had a beautiful spirit, he was very much loved and will be profoundly missed by all who knew him,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She added the family was still trying to process the sudden loss.<\/p>\n
\u201cHis life was taken far too soon – there\u2019s no other way to describe it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Friends and colleagues have echoed that sentiment, remembering Aksoy as thoughtful and driven. At the Keysborough fast-food restaurant where he worked for several years, coworkers described him as a \u201cwell-mannered, easygoing, social gentleman\u201d.<\/p>\n
Friend and co-worker Hasha Kong said the 20-year-old had been looking ahead to a long-awaited overseas trip.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe had big dreams, he was very intellectual, that\u2019s what I\u2019m going to miss the most about him,\u201d Kong said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI remembered he was so excited to go to Japan at the end of the year with his high school best friends, until this happened.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I am so grateful to have met him. I believe that anyone would love to have a person just like Volkan in their life.\u201d<\/p>\n
