(ABC News: Callum Flinn)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, he said the wait time was not as straightforward as it appeared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;My understanding of those numbers is they do not reflect the wait time, they reflect the total time it takes to see a nurse, get triaged, see a doctor, have some blood tests, have the results, then get seen by the referral team,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a treatment time as opposed to the wait time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But nine hours is on the higher side \u2014 we rarely go to those numbers these days. (Supplied: NSW government)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Haines said that Goulburn Base Hospital redirecting patients into the ACT could also be adding to the problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Unfortunately, we do find that Goulburn Hospital is very, very busy and often because they have such little capacity, they do provide us with more resistance than they should do,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So, Goulburn Hospital is a referral hospital for all of the smaller hospitals in the southern local health district but we&#8217;re finding that because they&#8217;re so busy, they often request that we refer our patients into Canberra.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And there&#8217;s actually no governance to say whether that&#8217;s appropriate or not, but if we can&#8217;t get our doctors at Goulburn to accept our patients, we don&#8217;t have a choice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Another challenge, according to Mr Haines, was returning NSW patients to their local hospital after their initial treatment in Canberra.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The problem is that a lot of NSW hospitals are stuffed to the gunnels and don&#8217;t have the capacity to actually take their patients back,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;What this does is put more pressure on the ACT health system, which obviously impacts the patients in the ACT that require those beds and those services.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The exterior of a one-storey building with signs next to the door reading &quot;Yass District Hospital&quot; and &quot;Emergency&quot;.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/290a9a9b49132071635a04fcaf55393a\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Paul Haines of the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association says a number of NSW hospitals don&#8217;t have the capacity to take their patients back from the ACT system.
