Formula 1 teams and stakeholders have \u200bunanimously agreed to engine rule tweaks aimed at improving the racing and driver safety from the next race in Miami on May 3.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The sport this season started a new era<\/a>, with the hybrid power units now split roughly 50-50 between electric and \u200bcombustion power.<\/p>\n

Some drivers have complained over \u200cthe first three races about having to “lift and coast” into high-speed corners so the combustion engine can recharge the battery, and have aired safety concerns regarding the start and speed differentials during the race.<\/p>\n

The chaos of F1’s new era<\/a><\/p>\n

Formula 1’s new era began with a dramatic, chaotic, and compelling grand prix in Melbourne. While views on the regulations are mixed, fans will likely decide if it is a success or failure.<\/p>\n

They have also had to \u200ccontend with “super-clipping”, where the power unit automatically diverts energy from the engine to the battery, slowing \u2060down the car even if the driver is flat on the throttle.<\/p>\n

It has had such an impact that four-time world champion Max Verstappen has \u200bquestioned his future in the \u200csport<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) said in a statement that an online meeting with the 11 team bosses, power unit CEOs and Formula 1 had agreed on a number of in-season “refinements” that would now be put to a virtual vote.<\/p>\n

“The proposals agreed today \u2026 will be implemented from Miami, apart from the \u200brace \u200cstart changes that will be tested in Miami and adopted following feedback and analysis,” it said.<\/p>\n

The FIA said energy management parameters would be adjusted for qualifying, a key area \u2060of concern, with a reduction in maximum permitted recharge \u200cfrom eight megajoules to seven to \u200cencourage more consistent flat-out driving and peak super-clip power increased from 250kW to 350kW to reduce the time spent recharging.<\/p>\n

In \u200cthe race, measures were introduced to reduce excessive closing speeds and limit sudden performance differentials with the maximum power available through boost capped at an additional 150kW.<\/p>\n

A new \u200csystem has \u200bbeen developed and will be \u2060trialled to mitigate the risks of a slow-starting car being struck by a faster one close behind, as well as measures to improve safety and visibility in the wet.<\/p>\n

“These are sensible changes and the teams, FIA and Formula 1 have done good work over the past \u2060few weeks to agree them,” Williams boss James Vowles said on social media.<\/p>\n

“F1 has seen some great racing so far this year, but \u200cit is right \u200cthat we always look at ways to keep improving.”<\/p>\n

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff had \u200bearlier told reporters changes needed to be made “with a scalpel and not with a baseball bat” and cautioned against bad-mouthing the sport in public.<\/p>\n
