Tim Tszyu\u2019s mega fight with Errol Spence Jr could be held in Australia as Gold Coast\u2019s Cbus Super Stadium emerged as a contender to host the $15 million blockbuster.<\/p>\n
This masthead can reveal the Queensland government has held talks with Tszyu\u2019s promoters with a view to staging Australian boxing\u2019s biggest fight since Jeff Horn\u2019s epic upset of Manny Pacquiao at Suncorp Stadium in 2017.<\/p>\n
Tszyu has agreed to terms to face American superstar Spence Jr, one of the best boxers of his generation who is eyeing a comeback to the ring after a three-year hiatus.<\/p>\n
And there is a concerted push for one of the biggest fights in world boxing this year to be staged on the Gold Coast \u2013 the scene of some of Tszyu\u2019s greatest wins.<\/p>\n
The Sydneysider won the WBO world title with his defeat of Brian Mendoza in October 2023 on the Gold Coast and now Tszyu wants to return to the Glitter Strip for the biggest payday of his career against Spence.<\/p>\n
Promoters for Tszyu and Spence have been investigating a number of options, including venues in Sydney, Brisbane, Las Vegas and the American fighter\u2019s hometown of Dallas.<\/p>\n
But Cbus Super Stadium \u2013 a 27,000-capacity venue that is home to the Gold Coast Titans \u2013 has rocketed into the mix.<\/p>\n
Dallas was rated the hot favourite to stage the Tszyu-Spence showdown, but it\u2019s understood Gold Coast will win hosting rights if the Queensland government backs the super fight.<\/p>\n
The Queensland government provided $5 million towards the Horn-Pacquiao world-title fight at Suncorp and a similar investment will seal the deal for a Gold Coast stadium show.<\/p>\n
Tszyu\u2019s strategic adviser Mike Altamura confirmed discussions were taking place to stage the fight Down Under on the Gold Coast \u2013 a region Tszyu has described as Australian boxing\u2019s version of Vegas.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey (a Tszyu-Spence fight in Australia) are the discussion points we are having with No Limit (Tszyu\u2019s promoters), so hopefully that can be wrapped up,\u201d Altamura said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt would be a massive spectacle to have a Tszyu and Spence fighting in Australia.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom our understanding, it\u2019s absolutely a possibility that Spence will come to Australia and fight on the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n
\u201cCbus Super Stadium is a field of dreams.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt would be another landmark moment for Tim in an already storied fighting career.<\/p>\n
\u201cFighting in a stadium show, in Australia, is the kind of platform and stage that motivates a proud athlete to bring out their A-game in every capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Should the Queensland government fail to come to the party, the fight is likely to be staged at AT & T Stadium, the home of NFL side Dallas Cowboys, in July or August.<\/p>\n
Tszyu fondly remembers Horn upsetting Pacquiao in front of 51,052 fans on a glorious Sunday at Suncorp and says his preference is to fight Spence on the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s where I\u2019m hoping it is, I\u2019ll be honest,\u201d said Tszyu when asked about fighting Spence at Cbus.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve had great experiences here on the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had Mendoza where I won the world title and I had (Carlos) Ocampo there and Gold Coast was off its head.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy not a mega, super fight such as Errol Spence down here (in Australia).<\/p>\n
\u201cThis (the Gold Coast) is the place where it should be at.<\/p>\n
\u201cWherever it is, it will be one hell of a show. It would be crazy magnitude.\u201d<\/p>\n
Altamura believes Tszyu could shock Spence and inflict just the second defeat of the American\u2019s career with a fight on Aussie soil.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnytime you can have a home-field advantage, it\u2019s a massive plus,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt would put Spence into a little bit of discomfort on the road.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe Tim has had a superior preparation to Spence for a fight of this magnitude.<\/p>\n
