But an even number of games will now be required.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldsun.com.au\/sport\/afl\/afl-eyeing-off-24game-season-international-matches-in-india-and-america-after-tasmanias-entry-to-the-competition\/news-story\/c90329406fad7988583e112f99ee388e\" title=\"www.heraldsun.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">The Herald Sun reports<\/a> a move backwards to 22 games is \u201cmuch less likely\u201d with a 24-game 2028 season seen as the most likely scenario.<\/p>\n<p>There are multiple options with the 24-game format including:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; teams play each other once (18 games) before a reset for the remaining six games, which could be determined by the ladder;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; the current format along with playing the 24th game overseas, in non-traditional markets, or in states willing to pay for hosting rights.<\/p>\n<p>The league confirmed to the Herald Sun it \u201cwas exploring different models of how the fixture could look when Tasmania enters the competition in two years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>AFL CEO Andrew Dillon and SA premier Peter Malinauskas on Fox Footy during Gather Round, which became the season\u2019s 23rd game in 2023. (Photo by James Wiltshire\/AFL Photos via Getty Images)Source: Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Essendon legend Kevin Sheedy called for the league to play a game in India, or in the USA, which the GWS Giants have held interest in for several years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com.au\/afl\/afl-2020-essendon-and-gws-to-play-in-america-for-premiership-points-in-2021-of-2022\/news-story\/63043ab4244171e819a850816fd14b01\" title=\"www.foxsports.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">That included preliminary talks in 2020<\/a> over a game against Essendon, played in Los Angeles or San Francisco, before the pandemic hit and saw the plans scrapped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur priority is Sydney and Canberra and we travel a lot. (Photo by Michael Willson\/AFL Photos)Source: Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Matthews argued the league should follow the NFL and turn a pre-season game, such as the current week of AAMI Community Series match-ups, into a proper game for points.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current fixture already has a built-in opportunity via the pre-season matches to account for the additional game. By converting one or both pre-season matches to four-point games, you would effectively have the 24th game within current constraints,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a significant opportunity to grow both AFL and AFLW in NSW and Queensland by delivering marquee events.
