{"id":62140,"date":"2025-08-12T08:57:20","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T08:57:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/62140\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T08:57:20","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T08:57:20","slug":"southeast-asias-cities-are-at-high-risk-of-flooding-and-heatwaves-thanks-to-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/62140\/","title":{"rendered":"Southeast Asia\u2019s cities are at \u2018high risk\u2019 of flooding and heatwaves, thanks to climate change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In recent weeks, there have been viral <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/23\/asia\/philippines-wedding-flood-photos-intl-hnk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/23\/asia\/philippines-wedding-flood-photos-intl-hnk\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">images<\/a> from the Philippines show couples exchanging wedding vows in flooded churches after Tropical Storm Wipha <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/7\/22\/typhoon-wipha-whips-vietnam-as-philippines-flooding-displaces-thousands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/7\/22\/typhoon-wipha-whips-vietnam-as-philippines-flooding-displaces-thousands\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">made<\/a> landfall in late-July. The storm swept through southern China and central Vietnam, with heavy rain causing flooding in both locations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vietnam and the Philippines are used to periods of intense rain, but climate change threatens to make these events more severe. Southeast Asia as a whole faces an escalating climate risk, due its densely populated cities, frequent heavy rain, and insufficient infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Recent modelling from Zurich Resilience Solutions found that six major cities in Southeast Asia\u2014Singapore, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, and Manila\u2014all face at least a \u201chigh risk\u201d of extreme precipitation, heatwaves, and rising sea levels through the 2040s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In particular, the modelling noted that Manila, Bangkok, Singapore, and Jakarta are among Southeast Asia\u2019s most climate-vulnerable cities, with critical infrastructure facing high exposure to multiple climate hazards.<\/p>\n<p>Zurich\u2019s risk modelling used data points from seaports, airports, and notable cultural sites, like Bangkok\u2019s Grand Palace and Manila\u2019s Fort Santiago. The analysis was conducted under the SSP2-4.5 scenario, a widely used projection developed Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The \u201cmiddle-of-the-road\u201d pathway assumes moderate global mitigation efforts and anticipates a two degree Celsius increase in global average temperatures between 2041 and 2060.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Manila, sites are at severe risk from extreme precipitation, storm surge, sea level rise, and flooding, threatening trade and cultural preservation,\u201d the report\u2019s authors wrote. Both Bangkok and Jakarta are also threatened by worse flooding from climate change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Zurich notes that governments are already investing to address some of these risks. For example, its report  highlighted that Singapore added another 5 billion Singapore dollars ($3.9 billion) to its coastal and flood protection fund this year to support new infrastructure like detention tanks, widened canals, and elevated platform levels. Ho Chi Minh City is also upgrading its drainage systems and expanding green urban spaces to curb local flooding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not investing in mitigation could result in severe financial losses. A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/tapping-rivers-lakes-for-climate-action-in-s-e-asia-could-avert-25-gdp-loss-by-2050-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/tapping-rivers-lakes-for-climate-action-in-s-e-asia-could-avert-25-gdp-loss-by-2050-report\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">report<\/a> from the World Economic Forum and Singapore International Foundation estimates that the impact of climate change could reduce Southeast Asia\u2019s GDP by up to 25% by 2050.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another study from Oxford Economics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordeconomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/FIA_Climate_Change_WEB.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.oxfordeconomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/FIA_Climate_Change_WEB.pdf\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">estimates<\/a> that a 1% increase in average temperatures could raise food prices across Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses in the region are also taking notice of how climate change\u2019s financial cost could hit their own operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>City Developments Limited (CDL), No. 139 on the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/asia\/ranking\/southeast-asia-500\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/asia\/ranking\/southeast-asia-500\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Southeast Asia 500<\/a>, estimated in 2023 that climate inaction <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/esg\/sustainable-finance\/cdl-raises-expected-cost-climate-inaction-half-s120m-2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/esg\/sustainable-finance\/cdl-raises-expected-cost-climate-inaction-half-s120m-2030\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">could cost<\/a> 120 million Singapore dollars ($93.2 million) by 2030, equal to almost 4% of its 2024 revenue.
