{"id":621894,"date":"2026-04-21T18:14:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T18:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/621894\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T18:14:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T18:14:11","slug":"new-2026-toyota-rav4-could-make-history-as-australias-first-electrified-and-suv-top-seller","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/621894\/","title":{"rendered":"New 2026 Toyota RAV4 could make history as Australia&#8217;s first electrified and SUV top-seller"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Toyota is predicting its <a href=\"https:\/\/evcentral.com.au\/2026-toyota-rav4-aussie-range-detailed-phev-and-hybrid-on-the-way-but-so-are-price-rises\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new RAV4<\/a> could become the first electrified vehicle and SUV to top Australia\u2019s new car sales charts, with the company planning to sell more than 50,000 of the mid-size family hauler this year.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota Australia vice president John Pappas said the company was confident the new-generation RAV4 \u2013 which arrived in showrooms last month \u2013 would be its best-selling model in 2026, and that overall chart-topping honours were a genuine possibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re planning on doing over 50,000 RAV4s next year,\u201d Pappas told EV Central. \u201cWe think it\u2019ll be our number one seller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/evcentral.com.au\/toyota-hilux-bev-price-announced-its-cheaper-than-what-was-expected-but-its-still-the-most-expensive-hilux-ever\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toyota Hilux EV price announced<\/a><br \/>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/evcentral.com.au\/get-that-on-ev-frickin-central-toyota-boss-exults-in-australian-launch-of-new-hilux-ev-in-2026-hydrogen-hilux-coming-in-2028\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cGet that on EV Frickin\u2019 Central!\u201d: Toyota boss exults in Australian launch of new HiLux EV in 2026, hydrogen HiLux coming in 2028<\/a><br \/>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/evcentral.com.au\/2026-toyota-rav4-hybrid-this-car-could-be-australias-best-seller-in-2026-its-a-bit-of-a-struggle-to-understand-why\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toyota RAV4 preview drive<\/a><br \/>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/evcentral.com.au\/toyota-confirms-compact-ev-for-australia-more-affordable-toyota-c-hr-bev-on-the-way-to-fight-byd-atto-3-and-geely-ex5-but-dont-rush-your-dealer-just-yet\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toyota confirms compact EV for Australia: More affordable Toyota C-HR BEV on the way to fight BYD Atto 3 and Geely EX5 \u2026 but don\u2019t rush your dealer just yet<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The hybrid version of the new RAV4 has just gone on-sale with the plug-in hybird version due later in the year.<\/p>\n<p>The big question is whether 50,000 sales will be enough to outgun everything else on the sales charts.<\/p>\n<p>Ford Ranger sales peaked in 2023 with 63,356 reported as sold, but have been gradually sliding since, still posting an impressive 56,655 sales in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Ranger sales for the first three months of 2026 are down almost eight per cent, but the brand has a significant update coming that will presumably kick things along.<\/p>\n<p>All of which sets the scene for an epic brawl at the top of the Aussie sales charts.<\/p>\n<p>An SUV has never topped Australia\u2019s annual new car sales charts, with utes \u2013 led in recent years by the Ford Ranger and Toyota\u2019s own Hilux (which soon arrives as a <a href=\"https:\/\/evcentral.com.au\/toyota-hilux-bev-price-announced-its-cheaper-than-what-was-expected-but-its-still-the-most-expensive-hilux-ever\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hilux EV<\/a>) \u2013 having dominated the top of the VFACTS leaderboard for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Toyota-RAV4-17-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"2026 Toyota RAV4 GXL.\" class=\"wp-image-47585\"  \/>Toyota thinks the new new RAV4 could top the sales charts.<\/p>\n<p>Before that it was small cars such as the Toyota Corolla and Mazda3 and before that locally-made Holdens and Fords.<\/p>\n<p>Pappas suggested early demand for the new RAV4 could push volumes even higher than planned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the initial orders that we\u2019ve got so far and the interest we\u2019ve got, it could do well above that (50,000),\u201d he said. \u201cSo in terms of overachieving our sales plan, we\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bullish prediction is underpinned by a broadened RAV4 range that, for the first time, includes the PHEV option alongside the existing regular hybrid.<\/p>\n<p>Pappas said Toyota expected PHEVs to account for around 30 per cent of RAV4 sales once those variants arrive later in 2026;
