Currently, Chavatipon is an assistant coach for the Arizona State, and Ovrootsky is a senior wrapping up her collegiate tennis career at Arizona State.\u00a0Their friendship deepened during their time playing together in college, both ladies learning how to navigate the new pressures of being a college athlete.<\/p>\n
Tennis, as the two girls explained, is often misunderstood.<\/p>\n
\u201cA lot of people say tennis isn\u2019t physical. That\u2019s a lie,\u201d Chavatipon said. \u201cAnd they say it\u2019s not mentally tough. That\u2019s also a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tennis demands mental endurance where matches, as described by Chavatipon are battles of your focus and resilience to win.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re in fight or flight the entire time,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you mess up, it\u2019s kind of on you.\u201d<\/p>\n
That pressure intensified during their collegiate years, when these individual performances directly affected the team’s placement.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I\u2019m not feeling my best, I don\u2019t do it for me,\u201d Ovrootsky said. \u201cI do it for my team.\u201d<\/p>\n
The girls describe their dynamic as a balance of humor and discipline. Off the court, they are often described as goofy and constantly joking with each other, but once they step into the tennis environment, things change.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know when things get real,\u201d one said. \u201cIt\u2019s not personal, it\u2019s for the betterment of the team.\u201d<\/p>\n
For Chavatipon, stepping into a coaching role and navigating the new challenge of guiding her best friend has been a true testament to their friendship, deepening their trust and bond.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s like coaching your sister,\u201d Chavatipon said. \u201cThere are things you want to say, but it\u2019s harder.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still with the foundation as strong as theirs, they make it work.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re like mini versions of each other,\u201d one said. \u201cWe\u2019ve taken personality traits from one another.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chavatipon describes a connection that goes beyond words, a friendship of shared understanding due to similarities in experiences and background.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t even have to say anything,\u201d Chavatipon says. \u201cShe just gets it.\u201d<\/p>\n
As their collegiate athletic careers start to wind down, their future endeavors are at the forefront of their mind. Ovrootsky is hoping to work in sport marketing, and Chavatipon is hoping to continue coaching and building the next generation of tennis players.<\/p>\n
