Broncos fans hoping that Selwyn Cobbo’s stint at the Dolphins<\/a> would only be a one-year affair have been left sorely disappointed after the outside back inked a new deal with the Redcliffe club on Tuesday. Cobbo played 83 NRL<\/a> games for the Broncos, but fell out of favour with coach Michael Maguire last season.<\/p>\n

The 23-year-old initially signed a one-year deal<\/a> with the Dolphins for 2026 after the Broncos told him he was free to leave due to salary cap restraints. Those restraints have eased slightly after the departure of Payne Haas and retirement of Adam Reynolds at the end of the season.<\/p>\n

Broncos fans had been hoping that Cobbo would have a one-year stint at the Dolphins and then return to the club where he debuted in 2021. But the Dolphins announced on Tuesday that Cobbo has extended his stay in Redcliffe until the end of 2027.<\/p>\n

“Selwyn impressed me with the way he presented himself as a young man in the first conversation we had and with what he wants to do with his footy as well,” Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf told AAP. “He impressed me with the way he turned up fit, the way he trained and how he fitted into the group really seamlessly. The players respect him and love him.”<\/p>\n

Dolphins CEO Terry Reader said he hopes Cobbo sticks around long-term. “We believe this contract extension is just the start of what will be a long career for Selwyn in the Dolphins’ jersey,” said Reader.<\/p>\n

“Selwyn has already made his presence felt at the Dolphins – on and off the field. What has been most impressive is how well he has melded into our playing group and the club in general. He has been a great fit for the Dolphins.”<\/p>\n

The fact he’s only signed a one-year extension means he could be positioning himself for a big payday with the PNG Chiefs. He’s averaged a career-high 174 running metres in six games this year, scoring two tries, setting up two and making five line-breaks.<\/p>\n

“He loves the relaxed environment of the Dolphins, he can’t be happier,\u201d Cobbo’s agent Tas Bartlett told The Courier Mail<\/a>. “It’s a different type of pressure to the Broncos, but a lot of his happiness has to do with ‘Woolfy’.<\/p>\n

“It looked very clear that the Broncos were going to struggle to afford Selwyn under the salary cap. It had nothing to do really with Selwyn being upset over being in reserve grade.
