US President Donald Trump says he will hold off on attacking Iran until Tehran’s negotiating teams come up with a unified proposal for a peace deal.<\/p>\n

In a social media post, Mr Trump said he would extend the current ceasefire until the Iranians submitted a proposal.<\/p>\n

But a US blockade in the Strait of Hormuz would continue, he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump’s announcement came shortly after US Vice-President JD Vance paused plans to travel to Pakistan for a possible second round of peace talks. A White House official later confirmed the trip had been cancelled.<\/p>\n

Iran had not confirmed it would participate in the talks. Iranian state media reported Iran had “no plans” to attend after the US attacked an Iranian-flagged cargo ship<\/a> on the weekend.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump had previously said it was “highly unlikely” he would extend the ceasefire. Just hours before his announcement, he told CNBC that if no deal was reached, “I expect to be bombing”.<\/p>\n

He had threatened to target civilian infrastructure, including bridges and power plants, despite warnings that would constitute a war crime.<\/p>\n

But on Truth Social, he said Iran’s government was “seriously fractured” and Pakistani officials requested that he hold off on any attacks.<\/p>\n

“I have therefore directed our Military to continue the Blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the Ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other,” he wrote.<\/p>\n

The Strait of Hormuz is still effectively shut down. Just three ships made it through the strait in the 24 hours before Mr Trump’s announcement, according to shipping data. Tens of thousands of sailors remain stranded<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Earlier on Tuesday, local time, the US Defense Department posted video it said showed American forces boarding a sanctioned Iran-linked oil tanker in the Indo-Pacific.<\/p>\n

“International waters are not a refuge for sanctioned vessels,” the department wrote.<\/p>\n

Pakistan’s prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, used X to thank Mr Trump “for graciously accepting our request to extend the ceasefire to allow ongoing diplomatic efforts to take their course”.<\/p>\n

“Pakistan shall continue its earnest efforts for negotiated settlement of conflict,” he wrote.<\/p>\n

“I sincerely hope that both sides will continue to observe the ceasefire and be able to conclude a comprehensive ‘Peace Deal’ during the second round of talks scheduled at Islamabad for a permanent end to the conflict.”<\/p>\n

There had been some confusion about when the ceasefire would expire. Mr Trump’s initial announcement indicated it would expire on Tuesday evening, Washington time (Wednesday morning, AEST).<\/p>\n

But this week, Mr Trump said it would continue for an additional 24 hours.<\/p>\n
