\n\tUpstart filmmaker Curry Barker<\/a> continues his mainstream Hollywood takeover with a big new gig: director on A24\u2019s anticipated film reboot of \u201cThe Texas Chainsaw Massacre<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tVariety has learned exclusively that Barker will take the lead on the project, billed by insiders as a \u201creimagining\u201d of the 1974 horror classic created by Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel. Barker\u2019s vision for the famed killer Leatherface and the gaggle of young things he terrorizes is under wraps. The film is being developed alongside a \u201cTexas Chainsaw\u201d TV series from Barnstorm\u2019s Glen Powel and Dan Cohen, and director JT Mollner.<\/p>\n

\n\tBarker\u2019s rise has been swift, and Focus Features is less than a month out from releasing his acclaimed festival player \u201cObsession,\u201d about a man whose wish for the love of a female friend turns deadly. That film was acquired in a bidding war that fetched a $14 million sale out of the Toronto International Film Festival. \u201cChainsaw\u201d takes Barker from his $800 debut feature \u201cMilk & Serial\u201d on YouTube to one of the most prestigious arthouse brands in the industry. <\/p>\n

Curry is currently in production on \u201cAnything But Ghosts\u201d at Blumhouse, serving as director, co-writer and star. The film centers on two fraudulent paranormal investigators who are forced to face real ghosts \u2014 and the lies underpinning their business. He\u2019s also part of the internet sketch comedy duo That\u2019s a Bad Idea alongside creative partner Cooper Tomlinson. Barker is repped by Underground Management, United Talent Agency and The Lede Company.<\/p>\n

The new \u201cChainsaw\u201d film will be produced by Roy Lee and Steven Schneider of Spooky Pictures, and Stuart Manashil and Exurbia Films\u2019 Pat Cassidy, Ian Henkel and Kim Henkel. Ben Ross of Image Nation serves as executive producer.<\/p>\n

\n\tThere are nine films in the \u201cChainsaw\u201d canon, including 1986\u2019s \u201cThe Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2,\u201d which was directed by Hooper and written by L.M. Kit Carson, and 1995\u2019s \u201cThe Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre\u201d aka \u201cTexas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation,\u201d written and directed by Henkel and starring Ren\u00e9e Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey. A novel, a comic book series and three video games have also been released under the \u201cTexas Chainsaw Massacre\u201d IP.<\/p>\n

\n\tA24 won the prize piece of IP in a heated auction last year, formally announcing in February, and fended off competing offers from companies including Blumhouse.
