We\u2019re still not fully on board<\/a> with a new take on one of the greatest horror films<\/a> ever made\u2014Tobe Hooper\u2019s 1974 masterpiece, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre\u2014but we\u2019re a little less on edge about the franchise\u2019s A24 era<\/a> with this latest update. A director has come aboard the planned feature film, and it\u2019s someone we\u2019re quite excited about: writer-director Curry Barker.<\/p>\n

If you haven\u2019t heard of him, it\u2019s because his breakout film, Obsession, hasn\u2019t hit theaters yet. It\u2019s arriving May 15<\/a>, though, which means horror fans can finally see the film that io9\u2019s own Germain Lussier has been hyping since he was lucky enough to catch an early screening at the 2025 Fantastic Fest.<\/a> The trailers<\/a> have only increased our excitement about watching this tale of a lovelorn guy who makes a magic-enhanced wish to land his dream girl\u2026 then feels swift, terrifying regret about it.<\/p>\n

Barker is not from Texas, but otherwise he seems like a good fit. Variety<\/a> got the scoop on his hiring, reporting that the film is \u201cbilled by insiders as a \u2018reimagining\u2019 of the 1974 horror classic created by Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel\u201d and that \u201cBarker\u2019s vision for the famed killer Leatherface and the gaggle of young things he terrorizes are under wraps.\u201d<\/p>\n

The trade also reminds us that, as previously reported, a Texas Chainsaw TV series is still in the works \u201cfrom Barnstorm\u2019s Glen Powell and Dan Cohen and director JT Mollner.\u201d There\u2019s no word yet on how the two projects might intertwine, if at all.<\/p>\n

Barker is currently busy with another horror film, Anything But Ghosts, which is under the Blumhouse banner and will see him direct, co-write, and star. It sounds like more of a horror comedy; Variety describes it as centering \u201con two fraudulent paranormal investigators who are forced to face real ghosts\u2014and the lies underpinning their business.\u201d<\/p>\n
