(ABC Pilbara: Alistair Bates)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said he had never seen one in the harbour before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve seen (box jellyfish) growing up, but it&#8217;s the first time in a long time I&#8217;ve seen them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Probably new to science&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The reaction of marine biologist Lisa-ann Gershwin was far more enthusiastic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This one we&#8217;ve thought for a while is probably new to science,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not yet named and classified, but this is the one that I&#8217;ve been trying to find.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Woman smiling for photos\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/4ce5f7bb64084ce1d3a720c2ea34bc31.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Lisa-ann Gershwin is one of Australia&#8217;s leading jellyfish taxonomists. (ABC News: Ebony ten Broeke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Gershwin said the animal was likely different from the box jellyfish found in the Northern Territory and Queensland, which have caused the deaths of about 80 people since records began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We generally consider the WA box jelly to not be, and I&#8217;m putting that in arm-waving quotes there, probably not be as dangerous,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t trust it, so don&#8217;t go and give it a cuddle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The only other time Dr Gershwin could recall such a &#8220;swarm&#8221; in WA was more than a decade ago, during <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2015-05-19\/box-jellyfish-may-be-first-found-in-deep-water\/6481946\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/6481946\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an offshore survey<\/a> in the Kimberley region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Leading that expedition was CSIRO senior principal research scientist John Keesing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They do occur as far south as Exmouth, but to get reports of large numbers of them is unusual,&#8221; Dr Keesing told the ABC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;d be very interested to see whether this population persists around Dampier for some time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Classification gap a &#8216;public health issue&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Keesing said it was &#8220;quite an endeavour&#8221; to scientifically distinguish one jellyfish from another, involving the collection of several specimens and DNA samples.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The challenges were compounded by a dwindling number of researchers with the knowledge and means to embark on the work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In Australia, we have a declining number of marine taxonomists,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So the pool of people who have the expertise to describe a new taxonomy of all sorts of animals in the marine environment is quite limited.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A leg covered in red jellyfish stings\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/6ff63fd817d11ffb80613d07898ff5af.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">John Keesing said learning more about WA&#8217;s box jellyfish could help the public better understand the risks.
