Source: Quilpie Shire Council.<\/p>\n<p>With fresh oil flows from the Taroom Trough already being refined locally, industry insiders believe the region\u2019s untapped potential could dramatically boost domestic fuel supply \u2013 if state and federal governments are willing to loosen strict environmental controls restricting production levels and access to much larger reserves in the Cooper Basin.<\/p>\n<p>Quilpie Shire Mayor Ben Hall said the Eromanga refinery, run by Inland Oil Refinery since 1986, was under-utilised \u2013 restricted to 635 barrels a day by the Regional Planning Interests (Lake Eyre Basin) Amendment Regulation 2024, while bigger refineries near Brisbane were free to produce up to 1,250 barrels a day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been called the Kuwait of Australia, and when you consider what we\u2019re sitting on, that\u2019s not overstating the oil reserves that can be safely accessed in our region,\u201d Mr Hall said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time when global fuel markets remain volatile, it makes sense to maximise what we have onshore and close to where it\u2019s needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe capacity out of the Taroom Trough is low, with only a handful of wells in operation, while the Cooper Basin has hundreds of wells with known capacity, and commercial infrastructure already established by Santos and BHP.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"www.realestate.com.au\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realestate.com.au\/news\/rate-increase-fears-as-councils-warn-of-1m-hit-off-funding-cuts\/?campaignType=external&amp;campaignChannel=syndication&amp;campaignName=ncacont&amp;campaignContent=&amp;campaignSource=the_courier_mail&amp;campaignPlacement=article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MORE: Council rate increase fears as mayor warns of $1m hit<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81303\" class=\"size-full wp-image-81303\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/capi_e62e1e645755748d6a5b84b0f6dc9e82_cb2a70799ebfd9ee3d070a87ea2e4609.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" data-capiid=\"cb2a70799ebfd9ee3d070a87ea2e4609\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-81303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eromanga is said to be one of Australia\u2019s furthest town\u2019s from the sea. Source: Quilpie Shire Council.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocal production, rather than transporting oil along the Warrego Highway to Eromanga, would also take pressure off road infrastructure, which is set to be impacted by increased large freight movements from Taroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Hall said unlocking development of Australia\u2019s first oilfield in 50 years would help the country\u2019s long-term fuel security \u2013 especially with oil reserves in the Cooper Basin able to be processed locally at the Eromanga refinery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor more than 40 years, this region has quietly delivered oil production without environmental incident \u2013 a track record that stands up under any level of scrutiny. Our oil is so pure it is used primarily for underground mining due to its low emissions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re only around 1,000km from Brisbane, and despite sitting on the very outer edge of the Lake Eyre Basin \u2014 which covers a huge 1.2 million square kilometres \u2014 our region is bound by the Regional Planning Interests (Lake Eyre Basin) Amendment Regulation 2024, which currently restricts further oil extraction from the Cooper Basin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said geologically it was a very stable region with a strong safety record.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81305\" class=\"size-full wp-image-81305\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/capi_e62e1e645755748d6a5b84b0f6dc9e82_dabe41ddd96a3ffb5ac7815822beec87.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" data-capiid=\"dabe41ddd96a3ffb5ac7815822beec87\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-81305\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Quilpie Shire Council is calling for revisions to regulations to allow for greater levels of fuel processing in the area. Source: Quilpie Shire Council.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re calling for the Cooper Basin to be front and centre in the national discussion on local fuel supply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said there was a \u201creal opportunity\u201d to ensure infrastructure already in place at Eromanga was recognised as a critical asset.<\/p>\n<p>Quilpie Shire Council has called for a review of policies including the Regional Planning Interests (Lake Eyre Basin) Amendment Regulation 2024 and the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next logical step is to ensure the Cooper Basin and greater Lake Eyre Basin aren\u2019t constrained from helping Australia at this time of crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said discussions were already underway regarding potential expansion at the Eromanga refinery to help scale up domestic production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe other part of the equation is to allow access to oil reserves in the Cooper Basin.
