Supercars<\/a> fans are questioning whether the process to award the Jason Richards Trophy might need some tweaking after revelations officials were left scrambling to figure out a tie-breaker scenario. Broc Feeney walked away with the coveted prize on Sunday – awarded to the driver with the most points across the two New Zealand rounds in Taupo and Christchurch<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Feeney ended up on 483 points after the six races – two in Taupo and four in Christchurch. Matt Payne finished second on 467 while Kai Allen was third on 423.<\/p>\n

Ryan Wood looked all-but assured of securing the trophy until disaster struck with just seven laps remaining on Sunday. The Walkinshaw driver couldn’t finish the race, which sent him from first in the trophy standings to fifth.<\/p>\n

Wood’s DNF sparked a mad scramble from Supercars officials because it left Feeney and Brodie Kostecki tied on points late in the race. Kostecki could have captured the trophy by overtaking Chaz Mostert, but Mostert forced him off the track<\/a> and Kostecki ended up finishing the race in 18th.<\/p>\n

That meant Feeney won the trophy outright, but at one point it looked like it would have to be decided on a tiebreaker. Had Kostecki finished the race fifth – where he was before the Mostert incident – he would have finished on the exact same points as Feeney.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Speedcafe<\/a>\u00a0this week, Supercars motorsport boss Tim Edwards admitted there was no tie-breaker scenario mentioned in the rules. They quickly had to decide that whoever finished highest in the final race of the weekend would break the tie between Feeney and Mostert.<\/p>\n

“It was very clear [who would win] until Ryan’s car stopped on the track, and then next thing we heard from timing was that we had two on the same points,” Edwards said. “Then everyone went, ‘hmm, we don’t mention that one (in the rulebook)’.”<\/p>\n

Ties in the Sprint Cup and Finals Series are broken by whoever has the most wins, and then the most second-place finishes. But ties in individual events like the Enduro Cup are decided by the highest finisher in the final race.<\/p>\n

The situation with the Jason Richards Trophy was complicated this year because it became a two-event competition rather than just the Taupo weekend. Supercars eventually decided to follow the Enduro Cup model and award the JR Trophy to the highest finisher on Sunday.<\/p>\n

They didn’t have to use a tie-breaker because of Kostecki’s low finish<\/a>, but the fact it would have gone to Feeney anyway has raised a few eyebrows. Fans are questioning whether the points system on the whole makes sense, given that Feeney didn’t win any of the six races.<\/p>\n

Kostecki and Payne both won two races each, while Wood and Allen won the other two. Feeney was rewarded for his consistency after five top-five finishes – 2 x second, 1 x third, 1 x fourth and 1 x fifth.<\/p>\n

For some it was a little galling that a driver who didn’t win any of the races was awarded the trophy as best overall driver. Numerous fans are calling for the system to be changed to whoever wins the most races over the two weekends, with the tie-breaker going on overall points after that.<\/p>\n
