Source: Facebook\/Protect the Heritage Coast \u2013 Vuda, Saweni<\/p>\n<p class=\"standfirst-content\">The waste-to-energy proposal has now resurfaced, with the Malouf family backing a new development as it moves through a crucial Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process in Fiji.<\/p>\n<p class=\"standfirst-content\">The plant is proposed for Vuda Point, near Nadi \u2013 Fiji\u2019s main tourism gateway and a key strip of resorts, beachfront developments and residential land.<\/p>\n<p class=\"standfirst-content\">Fashion label Kookai managing director Rob Cromb \u2013 who grew up in Fiji and is driving the proposal with Mr Malouf\u2019s backing \u2013 said the project was \u201cfundamentally different\u201d from earlier Australian proposals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"standfirst-content\">He pointed to European-standard emissions controls, cyclone-resilient engineering and a design tailored for Fiji conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"standfirst-content\">\u201cIt is not a replication of any overseas proposal,\u201d he told News Corp Australia, adding the facility was designed to handle Fiji\u2019s own waste \u2013 not Australia\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"standfirst-content\">\u201cThis project is not about bringing in waste from Australia \u2013 it is about dealing with the growing volume of waste already being generated within Fiji,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"standfirst-content\">However, he acknowledged the plant could eventually rely on imported waste to operate at full capacity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/capi_5e219412dc66eec6735c613397fb49fd_08d37908fbf91d35fe5323ac96741526.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-capiid=\"08d37908fbf91d35fe5323ac96741526\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" class=\"size-full wp-image-81270\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-81270\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The energy from waste plant proposal has Kookai managing director Robert Cromb leading the lobbying along with Australia\u2019s richest garbo Ian Malouf.
