Jude Bellingham has explained his decision to buy a minority stake in The Hundred franchise Birmingham Phoenix, saying: \u201cI feel like I owe the city something.\u201d<\/p>\n

The England and Real Madrid<\/a> star has taken a 1.2% holding in the Edgbaston-based franchise, revealing himself as the unnamed investor who had been mentioned in the annual accounts of the parent club, Warwickshire.<\/p>\n

The deal, which includes 0.6% from Warwickshire and 0.6% from American investment partners Knighthead Capital, comes with a price tag of more than \u00a3800,000.<\/p>\n

The Phoenix franchise was valued at around \u00a382m when Knighthead Capital acquired a 49% stake during the sales process<\/a> initiated by the England and Wales Cricket Board last year.<\/p>\n

Bellingham was brought up in Stourbridge and started his career with Birmingham<\/a> City, who retired the No 22 shirt after he left for Borussia Dortmund at just 17. The 22-year-old played cricket for Hagley in Worcestershire as a junior.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love Birmingham. I\u2019m very grateful for what the whole city of Birmingham has done for me,\u201d he said. \u201cI love cricket as well so when I got the opportunity to get involved I didn\u2019t really think twice about it, so I\u2019m so happy to be on board. I got the best upbringing into football, into life through Birmingham City. I feel like I owe the city something.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now it\u2019s difficult with how busy I am with football, but if there\u2019s a way in which I can help then I want to and this feels like a good way. I think it\u2019s so important to get our kids in the city out there playing sports. I think it\u2019s crucial and the opportunity of me being a part of Birmingham Phoenix is to try and help people realise there\u2019s different avenues. Some people will enjoy football, some people enjoy cricket.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was fortunate growing up I had the option of playing cricket and playing football, but some kids don\u2019t have that opportunity. It\u2019s important that if I can get involved in something like this to shine a light on an opportunity for kids, then even better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stuart Cain, chief executive at Warwickshire, welcomed the sprinkling of star dust at Edgbaston. \u201cJude loved cricket as a youngster and has wanted to be involved since The Hundred<\/a> first went to market to secure investors,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe understands high-performance sport, but more importantly as someone who grew up in the West Midlands and played the sport in his local streets, he understands the importance of sport and how it can play a positive role in young people\u2019s lives. So, we look forward to working with him on a number of community initiatives moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jacob Bethell, one of the brightest rising talents in English cricket, is set to captain Phoenix this summer, with the Australia great Ellyse Perry leading the women\u2019s team.
