Participating in the program along with JDE Peet’s, which is now part of Keurig Dr Pepper, are \u2060the company Tchibo and commodities traders Louis Dreyfus Company, Sucden, Neumann Kaffee Gruppe, Touton and Sucafina.<\/p>\n
The system will first target East Africa, covering Ethiopia, \u200bTanzania, Kenya, \u200bUganda, Burundi and Rwanda, the companies \u200bsaid, with the aim of \u200cachieving worldwide coverage of all coffee-growing regions in 2027.<\/p>\n
Under the EU Deforestation Regulation – expected to enter into force on December 30 for large corporations and June 30, 2027, for micro and small enterprises – coffee grown on land that has been classified as forest after December 2020 \u200cmay not enter EU markets.<\/p>\n
“This threatens to \u200bexclude millions of smallholder farmers from key \u200bmarkets, despite their sustainable \u200bfarming practices, simply because existing maps incorrectly classify their \u200cagroforestry or shade-grown coffee production land \u200bas forest,” said \u200bthe statement from JDE Peet’s.<\/p>\n
It added that the initiative will address “the historical lack of precise mapping data, which has frequently resulted \u200bin coffee farms… being \u200cmisidentified as natural forest.”<\/p>\n
The system will be open for consultation \u200bby farmers, governments and the coffee industry, the companies said.<\/p>\n
