Americans are <a href=\"https:\/\/foodinsight.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2024-IFIC-Food-Health-Survey.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/foodinsight.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2024-IFIC-Food-Health-Survey.pdf\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"trying to eat more\" data-node-id=\"0.4\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">trying to eat more<\/a> of it, so of course fitness and wellness brands are responding with their own spin on protein-maxxing: labels of high protein. With millions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/channel\/high-protein?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/channel\/high-protein?lang=en\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"\u201chigh protein\u201d posts\" data-vars-ga-product-id=\"6932c29c-7823-43aa-997b-9ac40cc4b71e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-node-id=\"0.6\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/channel\/high-protein?lang=en\" data-product-url=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/channel\/high-protein?lang=en\" data-affiliate=\"false\" data-affiliate-network=\"\" data-vars-ga-product-price=\"$0.00\" data-vars-ga-product-retailer-id=\"388ef125-ea87-4ebc-9f49-d9582161f1fa\" data-vars-ga-link-treatment=\"(not set) | (not set)\" class=\"body-link product-links css-10fnnmt e1aq0z090\" data->\u201chigh protein\u201d posts<\/a> on TikTok, what does the term actually mean?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cThere\u2019s no universally accepted definition,\u201d says <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/annescollege.fsu.edu\/faculty-staff\/dr-michael-ormsbee\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/annescollege.fsu.edu\/faculty-staff\/dr-michael-ormsbee\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Michael Ormsbee, PhD\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">Michael Ormsbee, PhD<\/a>, director of the Institute of Sports Sciences and Medicine at Florida State University. Still, it doesn\u2019t seem to be all baloney. The obsession over \u2018high-protein\u2019 is somewhat rooted in science.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Over the past few decades, there\u2019s been solid scientific research illustrating the relationship between a higher-than-Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a64323645\/protein-timing\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a64323645\/protein-timing\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"protein\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">protein<\/a> intake and its link to health benefits, like weight loss, muscle support, satiety, and bone health, says <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.emich.edu\/chhs\/health-sciences\/faculty\/j_carbone.php\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.emich.edu\/chhs\/health-sciences\/faculty\/j_carbone.php\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"John Carbone, PhD, RD\" data-node-id=\"2.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">John Carbone, PhD, RD<\/a>, professor of dietetics and human nutrition at Eastern Michigan University. Protein can also improve body composition, control appetite, and support metabolism, Ormsbee adds.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">If you&#8217;re still scratching your head over what \u201chigh protein\u201d means and whether you should buy a high-protein labeled product, we contacted experts to best explain it.<\/p>\n<p>What High Protein Means<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">THE RDA FOR protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day (or 0.36 grams per pound of body weight), says <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatrightpro.org\/about-us\/for-media\/meet-our-spokespeople\/grace-a-derocha\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.eatrightpro.org\/about-us\/for-media\/meet-our-spokespeople\/grace-a-derocha\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Grace Derocha, RDN\" data-node-id=\"6.2\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">Grace Derocha, RDN<\/a>, registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">So a 200-pound guy needs 72.7 grams a day. The USDA has an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nal.usda.gov\/human-nutrition-and-food-safety\/dri-calculator\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.nal.usda.gov\/human-nutrition-and-food-safety\/dri-calculator\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"online calculator\" data-node-id=\"7.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">online calculator<\/a> to help you calculate yours.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">High protein would technically be anything over that.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Ormsbee says he would define &#8220;high protein&#8221; as about 0.73 to 1 gram per pound of body weight. (MH previously reported that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a64272193\/how-much-protein-do-you-need\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a64272193\/how-much-protein-do-you-need\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"1 gram\" data-node-id=\"9.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">1 gram<\/a> per pound of body weight was ideal for most healthy people).<\/p>\n<p>Examples of High-Protein Meals and Snacks<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">A HIGH-PROTEIN MEAL for most men would be 35 to 45 grams, Derocha says. Ormsbee suggests that it could be up to 50 grams, depending on your body size, fitness status, and health goals.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Here are some examples of high-protein meals:<\/p>\n<p>A 6-ounce grilled chicken breast with quinoa and veggies (about 40 grams)Three scrambled eggs, two turkey sausage links, and whole grain toast (35\u201340 grams)1 cup cooked lentils, \u00bd cup edamame, and brown rice (about 35 grams)A 6-ounce salmon filet, sweet potato, and saut\u00e9ed greens (about 45 grams)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">A high-protein snack should be 15 to 20 grams, Derocha says. Carbone recommends choosing snacks following the \u201c10 percent rule,\u201d where the protein content in grams is about 10 percent of the calorie amount.
