(ABC Riverina: Jess Scully)<\/p>\n<p>Family duty<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Adam&#8217;s father and grandfathers served in the armed forces. (ABC Riverina: Jess Scully)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Adam&#8217;s father, Brett Farquharson, was a cook in the army and served in Nui Dat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">His father&#8217;s father, Charles Farquharson, was a lance sergeant and his maternal grandfather Everard James Earl was a captain in the army.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">When visiting a new cemetery, he will pick a grave at random to play for, and record it in a spreadsheet he uses to keep track.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you look up their records, you do feel closer to them, [they become] a person rather than a headstone&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Sometimes graves will be mossy or overgrown or weathered with holes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Most of the service graves have got rocks on them and there might be holes there,&#8221; Adam said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;To make them look a bit better, I&#8217;ve made myself some screens to screen the rocks out to get rid of the organic matter and the lichen and the moss.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"rows of graves in a cemetary\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/77ff41f7ca9de40418517ee0b3532e5c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Many military graves are marked with a rising sun, by a white headstone or bronze plaque, but others can be harder to identify. (ABC Riverina Jess Scully)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Usually a trumpet player, Adam said he mainly played the bugle in school but picked it up again as an adult, with a sense of duty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t know whether I was even asked, [the local RSL] said: &#8216;Robin&#8217;s retired, we need a bugler.'&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Every trumpeter is at risk of becoming a bugle player.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Once he realised his role at Anzac Day, Remembrance Day and military funerals, Adam created a yearly ritual where he would play the bugle in the cemetery every day between Australia Day and Anzac Day.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\" with worn military-style hats behind it. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/d910f680a4c74fadd966554e34c5692e.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Adam&#8217;s bugle, with his grandfather&#8217;s slouch hat and beret.
